My Digital Footprint

  1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

My digital footprint can impact my future opportunities in many ways such as whether I would like to get into a good university or a company could hire me if I have a good, positive digital footprint. On the other hand, many of my future opportunities can be gone once somebody sees my social media account if it has an overall negative outlook on me. Not everything you think is “private”. It can be accessed by others and people will offer you opportunities if you have a positive digital footprint.

2. Describe at least three strategies you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

A good strategy to keep your digital footprint safe is by using privacy settings. Keep a private account and only let people you know follow you on your accounts. Don’t share your password with anybody under any circumstances. You also don’t need to overshare everything you are doing and where you are going. Those are best kept to yourself for safety as well as never sharing any information with people you meet online or marketing agencies. Whenever sending a message or posting a picture, it is there forever. The internet never forgets. Make sure that whatever you put out their it is appropriate and has a positive impact. Use the T.H.I.N.K strategy when in doubt.

3. What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How will you go about telling them?

I learned how my digital footprint affects me and others around me. I would pass this on to students by letting them know to T.H.I.N.K before posting because as Benjamin Franklin once said,  “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Prevent yourself from putting harmful things on the internet before it becomes impossible to fix.
