1) Exposition
The beginning of this short story shows you how the father and son treat each-other.  The father is caring but in a very passive way, the son is a hoodlum who doesn’t know how to treat his dad, “I know that in a few minutes he will come in to look at me sleeping. He will check that I came home last night” (165).

2) Rising Action
The father and son throughout this book would try to make a connection but end up fighting instead, “‘why don’t you tell me where you are?’ ‘Because i never know where i am,'” the father is trying to show love but the son refuses to take that love (167).

3) Rising Action
The father is getting tired of showing love but is never loved back, “for two years, I never heard a scrape from you… I read of London in the papers. Watched scenes from London on the news… I know you, son, you are easily led… ‘I had to go collect you. Like a dog.'” (167,168)

4) Rising Action
This adds to the conflict, showing us that he really is a hoodlum that lies to his parents, “he pushes a hand-gun beneath the pillow… ‘Why do you always spy on me, you nosey old bastard?’ his voice breaks…  ‘What’s that? Under your pillow?'” (169).

5) Rising action
The rising action will be when the murder comes to talk to the son, we do not know this is going to happen, “my son with friends. Talking. What he does not do with me.” However, this still preparing us for the dramatic effect for the ending. (169)
