Math 9 Final Review 2017

What is the difference between -5^2 and (-5)^2 ?

THE DIFFERENCE

First off, we have to find the difference between the two.

One number has brackets around the negative and the five, while the other one doesn’t.

THE BRACKETS

Now we have to know what the brackets do. The brackets put the negative with the number. Without them, the number and the negative wouldn’t be together.

THE EQUATION

Finally we see the difference in the equation. For -5^2 , we answer it as if it was 5^2 then we add the negative at the end. and that gives us -10.
And for (-5)^2 you have to answer it, keeping the negative attached to the 5. That gives us positive 10.

A PORBLEM USING EXPONANTS

Using what we learnt now we can answer a question a bit harder while using BEDMAS. -2^6 + 5^3 * -7.
We start by solving the exponent part of the question.
-2^6 = -64 and 5^3 = 125. Now the equation becomes -64 + 125 * -7.
Then we continue onto the multiplication. 125 * -7 = -875. This makes the equation -64 + -875.
-64 + -875 = -939.

-2^6 + 5^3 * -7 = -939
