for my community connections, I decided to interview my dad’s cousin, Graeme Kennedy because he is a photographer and travels the world taking so many different job opportunities photographing everything from donuts in Shanghai to weddings in Hawaii. I admire him for pursuing his dreams so much and I hope that I can one day love my job as much as he does. I learned many things from this interview but one of the main things I took from this is to say yes to more things and not to turn down opportunities no matter how scary it is. I am going to try and go out and take photos more often because the only way to get better is to practice.

Like with most creative industries, you have to learn to stand out, whether that’s having a unique style, or trying new things, I have learnt that the best way to overcome obstacles is to stay kind to everyone, And see everything as an opportunity. The more that you do, the more that you have access too. Starting as a photographer is hard, you’ll have a lot to learn and a lot of competition, but keep trying new things, keep photographing new things, and quickly you’ll learn that being creative is all about seeing obstacles as opportunities to grow and experiment.

My advice is to say yes. Say yes to everything. Everything is an opportunity to learn, so don’t make excuses for why you can’t travel, or go somewhere, or see something, always say yes. Some of my most incredible memories have happened when I’ve said yes to a project that I usually wouldn’t have taken, such as a free project or favour for someone. If you start to see everything as an opportunity to grow, you will quickly get to see more and more interesting things,

I started by just experimenting, I got a little camera one year for Christmas and just kept taking photos, trying new things, slowly I got better, and became more curious about it, as I started to travel it made my work more interesting, I started publishing work in places like the BBC and Times, it’s important to know that you are always growing, some things take time, as a photographer I’m always learning new things and getting better.

I was about 15 is when I started, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was older, but I tried many different things, lifeguarding, making movies, designing websites. I think all of those little skills were important for being able to do what I do now. So even though I didn’t know I’d be a photographer, by trying so many different things, it helped me become who I am today.
