community connections : Brad Rimek surrey firefighter (captian, acting chief)

He is passionate about his job because he loves helping people, giving back and making a difference to the city of surrey.

He wanted to be like his dad. who was a chief of Vancouver firefighters for over 20 years. My uncle decided to take the acting captains course. it took him months of studying of the physical and written course. He then took the acting chief course. when 4 people retire, he will become the chief of firefighters of surrey

The best way to become a good firefighter is to find things to do even when there’s nothing to do. You also should do everything I your power to help people.

He would not be open to answering questions from other students at the moment because he doesn’t have time and he doesn’t want me to give our his email.

*My own questions*

“What have you done to give back to the community? fundraisers, tournaments etc”

He has done drop in hockey and drop in sledge hockey with his firefighter crew. In November every year, he also helps with salvation army dinner and he serves them cookies, soup with sandwiches a shelter. He says a majority the homeless people are either kicked out of their house or they have been involved with alcohol at a young age. it could be parents divorce or anything.

” what is the most difficult call you’ve ever been to”

He says there is one in particular. it was a young boy who was smoking a joint and it had chemicals that they put in horse tranquillizers. now he was allergic to those chemicals and is friends called 9-1-1. the boy had a severe allergic reaction and is in hospital and is stable.

I interviewed my uncle, Brad Rimek who is a surrey firefighter as a captain. He makes sure everyone is in line and does things correctly. I chose to interview him because he is an amazing human, firefighter and he is my role model. I learned that he cares and helps people more then I thought before, I want to be a firefighter when I’m older and I like to help people aswell.
