New media is the modern way to gather information, whether it is on your computer smartphone, or tablet, information is on-demand and at the push of a button. Where traditional media (radio, articles, television) is programmed at a specific time and not as accessible as the new media. Media consumption varies from person to person but personally, would switch from social media to games to shows and back throughout the day. Some days, the time used on media will be different from others depending on what happens throughout the day but all the same, my media intake is staggered and fragmented. A healthy way to limit your media use is to have screen time to remind someone how long they are in front of a screen. Having a balance in your day-to-day life is important and it’s believed social media disrupts this balance in many of us today and may shape the ways we think and act just as Faris Yakob stated, “You are the media you eat” (2016). Many of the media we gather from various sources may be misleading and false, a way to ensure one finds truthful information is to do a background check on the website. It is possible to inspect the author, read comments, and double-check the information with other sites, look at the domain to see if the sites are secure, or just use common sense and judge it by its display and name because, “none of it is rocket science” (Mantzarlis 2008).
