The Liberty Song

Meaning: The Liberty Song is an America’s first patriotic song written by John Dickinson. When this song was published in 1768, Americans were not independent of Britain. The song delivers a message that Americans have the right to their freedom (independence) and they will fight for it for their future generation. The line, “For heaven approves of each generous deed”, reflects the Americans’ belief that God will help them succeed because their cause is ‘righteous’. The song was a great advocate for Americans especially since it was written by John Dickinson, who was one of the founding fathers of the United States.

Theme-statement: One needs to sacrifice for the freedom of the future generation.

I found the song ironic because the lyrics are about the fighting for the freedom of America but the tune of the song is Royal Navy of Britain.
