What literature has taught me about the effects of racism

The poem What Do You Remember of the Evacuation shows that racism cause separation of families. The poem uses a little girl’s perspective to show her innocence, and how she felt and saw the evacuation as a child. At the end of the poem, she becomes ashamed of her heritage due to the racism. It is true that the evacuation forced her to feel ashamed of being Japanese even though she was a little kid. The other source Indian Horse tells that racism causes people mental problem. In Saul’s case, the racism also includes different types of abuse and it inflicts trauma upon children who go to residential school. Saul becomes less hopeful towards everything even towards his life, and himself. These two sources show that racism takes away everything from the victims. Racism takes their life, their family, and their hope. Then victims start to feel inferior to other people after they face the racism.
