Grammar video/Dependent vs. Independent clauses

What is the difference between a dependent and independent clause? To get a general idea of what these phrases mean, we can look at the words themselves. Dependent means to rely on something, and independant means to “be free from outside control; self – supporting.” We can gather that one is individualistic and one depends on something. A dependent variable is a group of words that does not form a full thought, it depends on another group of words to finish it. Hence the word “dependant”. An independent clause is a group of words that forms a full thought on its own. It is a full sentence, it does not rely on anything else to finish it. Both dependent and independent clauses include a subject and a verb. Now that we have discussed the difference between dependent and independent clauses, we can discuss the rules within them. One item going along with this is a “dependant marker word”. A dependent marker word is added to the beginning of an independent clause to turn it into a dependent clause. An example would be starting out with an independent clause such as, “My neighbor doesn’t pay his rent on time.”, and transforming it into a dependent clause by adding an “if”. The phrase would now be, “If my neighbor doesn’t pay his rent on time….” leaving it as a dependent clause. You may also join dependent and independent clauses together, as well as joining two independent clauses together. A term referred to as “subordinating conjunction” allows you to connect dependent and independent clauses. The product of this action results in what is called a complex sentence. Either clause can come first. You may also join two independent clauses together, using either a coordinating conjunction, or an independent marker word. The difference between the two, is a coordinating conjunction must have a comma separating the two clauses, whereas an independent marker word must have a semicolon. This is because an independent marker word can stand alone and always begin a sentence, again hencing the term independent. Finally, when joining two independent clauses, the action results in a compound sentence, whereas when connecting a dependant and independent clause, the action results in a complex sentence.
