A Star in a Bottle – Written by Raffi Khatchadourian
Raffi Khatchadourian, writter for the New York Times, explains one of societies new ideas for solving “the world’s energy problems for the next thirty million years.” What first drew me to this article was the title itself, interested what A Star in a Bottle could possibly mean. The premise itself is to create a miniature star through advanced chemistry and physics, to end up using it as a form of energy. This is a very interesting topic because the universe as well as what makes it up has always been fascinating to me. The possibility of somehow utilizing the power of a star as a form of energy would truly advance society’s progression to another level. One notable style of writing Khatchadourian uses that I like and believe enhances this piece of writing is his use of imagery. Khatchadourian is very descriptive in this article and his usage of vocabulary stating the intense cost of the project as well as the absurd temperatures really emphasizes how amazing of a project this idea would be. This idea caused me to stop and look back at stories I have read or movies that I have seen where the future of civilization is highly advanced. This article provided me with an insight of how our society will progress in the future and that my vision of the future, where our society lives in prosperity and limitless energy, may not be as much of a distant thought anymore.
Thanks, Patryk – I love the title of this article – interesting but also kind of scary… thoughtful composition.
