Week 17 – Pre-Calc 11

Trigonometry! Or trig for short.

Our minds have been blown this week with the idea that a triangle can go past 90 degrees! It is a little strange to conceptualize but the idea isn’t too wild. Let me explain.

Our previous knowledge of trig ended with Pythagoras and that there were a total of 180 degrees inside of a triangle. Now we go beyond.

We have two types of angle. The rotation angle and reference angle. You can find these by drawing your line at whatever angle is given then draw a vertical line to the x-axis. The triangle created makes you reference angle and the rotation angle is the angle to your line. That’s why you can have a triangle with an angle of 200 degrees now.

This also works by mapping a coordinate in a specific quadrant then drawing your line back to the origin. You can create any manner of a right angle triangle at any degree by following this method!

And that was this week’s big takeaway.

PS: sin = y/r , cos = x/r, tan = y/x
