Sold

In Sold, Patricia McCormick writes about a thirteen year old girl, Lakshmi, who was sold into the sex trade. McCormick describes the struggles and sacrifices Lakshmi faced while trying to help support her family. On her way to the city to look for a job, Lakshmi was taken advantage of and found herself trapped as a child prostitute. The novel Sold describes how Lakshmi found her way in and out of the dark. This book explains how the love of family can give you the will to survive.

do you think Lakshmi would have been able to stay strong as the life of a child sex trade if she didnt have the love and support of her family? I dont think that Lakshmi would have been able to get through without the thought of getting back to her family and making sure they were healthy and safe.

Tacky Tabloid Poem

Beyonce and Jay-Z

They are the king and queen of music,
full of fortune and fame.
Madly in love, these two came together,
we wonder who was to blame.
All of a sudden baby Blue came along,
and their family became three.
Being the best became too much,
how will they break free?
Work together, solve their problems,
or is this the end?
Rumours say it is over,
will there relationship mend?

Where I’m From

I am from a paintbrush, from acrylic and watercolor.
I am from the view outside of my window.
(Flowing, blue, feels cold as ice.)
I am from the rose bush, the tall strong trees, protecting those I love.
I am from vacations in Hawaii and laughing with all, from mom and dad and the Stephenson’s.
I am from the generous and the do it all’s.
From helping others to excepting all.
I am from the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea.

I’m from Canada, maple syrup and bacon.
From the time my cousin caught more than just a fish, and the scraped knees of my grandpa fixing the boat.
I am from the photo albums in the closet, the wrinkled school picture in my dads wallet.
I am from the memories, the ones that will be with me forever.

Three Poems

My Wife
Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850 – 1894

Teacher, tender, comrade, wife
A fellow-farer true through life,
Heart-whole and soul-free
The august father
Gave to me.

My Wife is an appropriate poem for a wedding celebration because it describes the love that Robert Louis Stevenson felt for his wife. In the first line, “Teacher, tender, comrade, wife”, the author seems to be listing the qualities he admires in his partner. Stevenson writes, “Heart-whole and soul-free”, describing someone who is loving and generous with a free spirit. I am unsure who the August father is but it appears Stevenson feels his wife is so perfect she was given to him, like a soulmate.

by Mary Alice Ramish
http://www.thefuneralsite.com/ResourceCenters/Poetry_and_Quotes/Popular.html

Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one’s gone.
Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, far as long as there is memory, they’ll live on in the heart.

Those we love remain with us is an appropriate poem to read at a funeral because the theme is very comforting. The words, “far as long as there is memory, they’ll live on in the heart”, explain a loved one may not physically remain but they live on in other ways and are cherished because of the memories they left behind. This poem provides hope to someone grieving.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go
by Dr. Seuss

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
Any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go is a perfect poem to recite at a graduation because it represents moving on and doing good things. This poem would inspire graduates to chase their dreams and do what they want to do. The first lines of the stanza give a message that no matter where you are in life, you are prepared and in control of your choices. This poem also makes it clear that you are in charge of your future so don’t let others try and direct it. This is emphasized by capitalizing the word YOU.
