The Essay.

The pearl is a story that takes place in LaPaz, Mexico written by John Steinbeck. The whole story is about Kino, his family and problems that occured once he found the biggest pearl anyone had ever seen. An important character in the story is the doctor because he was not like other doctors. A doctor is a very important person in the society because he/she is supposed to help people with their health problems. However, in “The Pearl,” the doctor was the complete opposite because he had no respect for human life, uses his profession only for money rather than for helping people and was greedy, racist and dishonest with the people of his town.

The doctor is a racist and dishonest person who only loves money. He doesn’t want to help Kino’s son who was stung by a scorpion and even made fun of them. This is seen when he states, “Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians?” This shows… Furthermore, when he says, “No, they never have any money. I, I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing- and I am tired of it. See if has any money!” This example shows that he believed that everybody in this village had no money. He was more concerned with money rather than helping people. His greed is also seen when, “ he new that kino has the biggest pearl he said “ He is a client of mine, I’m treating his child for scorpion sting.” and his eyes rolled up a little and he thought of Paris.

The doctor just want money and he made fun of kino’s family. He said that he is not curing them he is a human doctor, not a veterinar. In this example the doctor said that they are so poor and he can not cure his son and also because they are so poor he called them animal. The news came to the doctor where he sat with a woman whose illness was age, Though neither she nor the doctor would admit it.

This example shows that he was lying to people. He was keeping an old woman whose illness was age to cure just because of earning some money. As we all know that nobody can cure a person whose illness is age. In this part of the story it shows that the doctor was so Greedy and Racist, Specially in front of poor people.

When the doctor know about the pearl that Kino find it from ocean he went there to help them. When the news came to doctor, and when it was obvious who Kino was, The doctor grew stern and judicious at the same time.”He is a client of mine,” the doctor said.” I’m treating his child for the scorpion sting. The doctor’s eyes rolled up a little in their hammocks and he thought of Paris. He remembered the room that he had lived in there as a great and luxurious place, and he remembered the hard-face woman who had lived with him as a beautiful and kind girl, although she had been none of these three. When doctor knows from the pearl and he thought that he will cure kino’s son and he will take the pearl from him and he will become rich and can go back to Paris. The doctor looked past his aged patient and saw himself sitting in a restaurant in Paris and a waiter was just opening a bottle of wine for him. The doctor instead of treating kino’s son he was giving him poison to make him noise and feeling pain that Kino let him to cure his son. In this part the doctor was trying to take kino’s money. And he did whatever he could to take his money. He was dishonest with kino he does not want to help him, all and all what he wanted was just his money.

The doctor just wanted money and he doesn’t care about what would happened to the people he could do whatever he wants to earn money.

The doctor was dishonest to the people of the town and he was trying to extort money from Kino and his family. The doctor thought he was superior to kino’s family. He was a superficial person who is only out for personal gain. He has come only to make money and his greed distorts his human values. The doctor is duty to act to save human life but when confronted with someone whom he considers beneath him, the doctor feels no such duty. He was just thinking about his own financial profits. Therefore, the doctor is a racist, dishonest and greedy person.
