Life in a Love by Robert Browning

Escape me?

Never —

Beloved!

While I am I, and you are you,

So long as the world contains us both,

Me the loving and you the loth,

While the one eludes, must the other pursue.

My life is a fault at last, I fear:

It seems too much like a fate, indeed!

Though I do my best I shall scarce succeed.

But what if I fail of my purpose here?

It is but to keep the nerves at strain,

To dry one’s eyes and laugh at a fall,

And, baffled, get up and begin again, —

So the chase takes up one’s life, that’s all.

While, look but once from your farthest bound

At me so deep in the dust and dark,

No sooner the old hope goes to ground

Than a new one, straight to the self-same mark,

I shape me —

Ever

Removed!

Analysis

Imagery :

“To dry one’s eyes and laugh at a fall,

And, baffled, get up and begin again, —” (Line 13 – 14)

Makes me imagine the cliché one person wiping another’s tears when they’re sad and laughing at the small things. A happy couple deeply in love.

Imagery :

“Me the loving and you the loth,” (Line 6)

I imagine someone being in love with someone who doesn’t want to be loved or someone who doesn’t reciprocate the feelings.

Lyric device :

There is a rhyme scheme A, B, B, A. It changes later in the poem to A, B, A, B

I think when the rhyme scheme changes so does the mood of the poem. It goes from this loving mood to doubt.

Lyric device :

My life is a fault at last, I fear: (Line 8)

Alliteration, I think its used to emphasize that he’s worried he’s wasted his life.

Figurative device :

Cliché

“To dry one’s eyes and laugh at a fall,

And, baffled, get up and begin again, —” (Line 13 – 14)

This is the typical thing someone would think of when they think of a sweet boyfriend. This shows how committed he is to the other person.

Figurative device :

Syntax

While the one eludes, must the other pursue. (Line 7)

The poet used a syntax to make the line fit into his rhyme scheme.

Theme :

From the title alone you can tell that this poem is about being in love, as though his love is more than his life.  Throughout the poem he seems like he has so much love for someone who is not as in love as he is. That he is willing to do anything for his love whether they reciprocate his feelings the same way.

Nothing New About Neurons and Sciencey Synapses

We all have neurons, its thanks to them that we can function. They’re the cells that transfer information throughout the body. But what are neurons made of? They have 4 main parts : the cell body that has the nucleus in it, the cell body is surrounded by dendrites and they’re what receives the messages and send them to the cell body, from the cell body there’s a line of axons that lead to the end of the neuron, the axon terminal. All the neurons are connected by the dendrites to the axon terminals.

When the dendrite receives an action potential (AP) it goes along the axons, for the AP to move along the axons are depolarized and re-polarized. Before an AP is received the axon has more positive ions on the outside the axon than inside of the axon. The inside of the axon has a charge of -70mV roughly.

When an AP is received the axon opens up passages that allow Na+ ions to enter the axon, the charge inside the axon then becomes positive. This is called depolarization.

Re-polarization is triggered when the depolarization is complete. Re-polarization lets the K+ ions out of the axon. The charge in the axon returns to normal and then the cycle continues until the AP reaches the axon terminal.

The axon terminal has synapses, inside the synapse the axon terminal creates neurotransmitters (NTs), the NTs carry the AP across a small gap and to the receptors on the other side. It starts when the axon terminal receives an AP it releases the synaptic vesicles that carry the NTs. The neurotransmitters then bind to the receptors on the other side. NTs fit to the receptors like a key in a keyhole. The neurotransmitter is either excitatory and stimulates the AP or its inhibitory and stops the AP.

There are some things that do inhibit or enhance the NTs though. Some drugs or chemicals can interfere such as nicotine, while other drugs enhance the NTs so they are bigger. Chemicals/drugs that enhance the NTs are called Agonists whereas drugs/chemicals that block the NTs are called antagonists (flashbacks to English class haha)

Technology

The world is a vast place already and technology has only expanded it, we now have so many devices that allow us access to the internet. But the web has not done us much good. 4 years ago smartphones created 3 million metric tons of e-waste. E-waste is waste from phones that takes hundreds of years to decompose and some part may never decompose. It affects the health of the planet but also has lots of negative affect on mental health. Facebook depression is a term used to describe the classic symptoms of depression that show when a teen uses social media excessively. Not only that but social media takes away our individuality, people spend so much time looking at unrealistic standards that are posted online. I’m not saying all technology is bad but tech should stay in the workplace and away from the dinner table. We need to be able to separate things in our lives.

A Night with Nature

The cold silence was broken with a sharp howl aimed at the moon. It was 10pm; everyone at home had relaxed, and the hot summer air had finally cooled down. Sabine stood by the door in my pyjama pants and shirt which were obviously a little big on her. “Shall we?” I asked. I open the door to the cool summer night air and slipped on my shoes. She stepped into hers. I grabbed her hand and intertwined our fingers. We strolled to the stairs and I stopped. I looked up at the dark clear sky. The stars were more visible than most nights and tiny specks of light decorated the sky. “The sky is so pretty,” I whisper.

“It really is.”

“I wish we had no cities, we could see the skies so clearly”

“That would be pretty nice.”

“Yeah.” We continue down the stairs and then along the sidewalk towards the large building. The bushes and flowers show a bit of deep red and dark green as the dim street lights flicker.

The silent night is disturbed as we both sit on a swing. The warm air blows in my face as I get higher and higher. I stare at the clear sky. We talk about life, the future, and our relationship. I fly through the air and land in the wood chips, I stumble to regain my balance. “You good?” Sabine asks.

“I’m good, don’t worry,” I laugh.

“Shall we head back?”

“If you want”

“Let’s go.” She hops off the swing much more gracefully than me. I pull her into an embrace, her head resting in my neck. Instead of letting go, I swing my arms under her legs and pick her up. “I love you,” I whisper. “You’re the best.”

Instead of responding she kisses my cheek. “Let’s go, you,” she giggles.

“M’lady.” And I start marching back to my house. After about 3 minutes I stop.

“I’ll walk on my own, it’s fine,” Sabine whispers. I lower her and let go, she stands next to me and I put out my hand. Our hands intertwine and we keep walking.

The street lights dimly light everything, the air is a gentle breeze, and the silence makes everything so calm. The only creatures around other than her and I are the bugs. We approach the stairs and I stop and point. “Shh, look over there,” I whisper. There in the middle of the street stands a coyote. It’s fur perfectly laying on it’s body, it tilts its head up and let out a long howl. The quiet air is broken. The howl was echoed back, coming from a nearby forest. It felt as though time had frozen. The coyote stared at us and I stared back, I couldn’t move my gaze. The wild animal had a certain beauty to it; wild creature in the middle of civilization. I felt so alive in that moment, there was a force of nature, Sabine, and I. Nothing else disturbing the moment. I wanted to stop time and just stay there to appreciate it’s beauty. Although I’d stay in that time for long, the coyote had other plans. It sat up and started to gently saunter away, its tail swaying back and forth as it disappeared up the hill towards the forest. And the silence of the night comes back. Sabine faces me, “It was so pretty,” she whispers.

“It was beautiful,” I respond

“That was a good end to our night.”

“It was, I wonder how many more there are.”

“Who knows.”

We continued back to my house in silence. What was wonderful is that despite not living like us animals had their own families and places they called home. I stand there staring at where the coyote was when I feel a tug on my arm, I look and see Sabine pulling me towards the stairs. I follow her and stride up the stair with her. We make it to my house and remove our shoes and step into the warmth of my house.

The sharp howl from the coyote and its beauty engraved itself in my mind. The peace in that moment was so calm and relaxing yet it gave me energy and I felt so present and alive. We are all children of mother nature and have a home on this earth, despite how much humans have ruined the world for wild animals. The coyote was a reminder of that.

Starting the Change for First Nations People

There are so many terms that we don’t use any more as they are seen as racist, derogatory, or offensive. Despite the word Eskimo having an awful past, a sports team decides that using the word Eskimo in their team name is appropriate. The Edmonton Eskimos.

When was the word Eskimo used? The word Eskimo was used by archeologists and anthropologist when referring to northern First Nations people. They were pretty much calling the First Nations people cavemen and unintelligent. The term shines a bad light on the First Nations people. Norma Dunning, a First Nations with a PhD in Indigenous People’s Education at the University has called out the Edmonton sports team saying that “it’s time to get rid of it and recognise the Inuit people as modern day people.” Instead of saying that they will change the sports team name they said they use the word Eskimo with positivity and the “utmost respect”. There is nothing positive or respect about the word. It is an insult to all northern First Nations people.

Lots of Inuit people think that the name change would show respect to the First Nations people. If an entire group of people are saying the team name is inappropriate, derogatory, offensive, disrespectful, and wrong then why has the team not made any changes to their name. The First Nations people and the sports team have two opposing perspectives on the issue, but it was not the sports team being mistreated and misplaced. It was the Inuit people. The sports team seems to not understand that. If someone asks you to stop calling them something then you do the polite and respectful thing to do and you stop. And just because the team was founded in 1949, a racist time, doesn’t mean that they can’t change it. The First nations people have been mistreated for so much longer than they’ve had their dumb sports team name.

If the team name had the N word in it, or any other racist term would they have changed it? Probably. But the team has no respect for the Inuit people who have suffered and had their land stolen from them. Its because of teams like theirs that derogatory words are still being thrown and the First Nations people, be one to start the domino effect and change your team name Edmonton Eskimos. By the type of role model that the world needs. Show respect to those who suffered.

Why Piggy Wouldn’t Be A Good Friend For Me

Why Piggy Wouldn’t Be A Good Friend For Me

Piggy, one of the main characters, would he make a good friend? Would his constant rule following and laziness affect your friendship with him? Here are 3 reasons why Piggy would not be a good friend for me.

1. He’s no fun.
All Piggy does is complain. He complains about things his auntie has told him or about his asthma. He doesn’t even know how to swim. What would be the point in having him join me and friends on a beach day if he won’t even go in the water. Plus with his habit of following rules it would be hard to be friends with him, I don’t enjoy following all the rules. Plus I am very creative and think of wild and fun ideas, but all Piggy would do is shut them down with his science and logic.

2. He wouldn’t stand up for anyone.
I get into a few arguments with people, I need friends who can back me up and help me. Piggy is not a boy who could do that. He can’t even stand up for himself when he is being teased by other boys. He doesn’t even tell people his real name. If I was his friend, I’d be more like a big sister having to make sure other kids don’t tease him or make fun of him.

3. He’s slow and lazy.
Piggy doesn’t help around at all. All he does is sit around and do nothing productive. And he is very slow. I’m a fast walker, one of my pet peeves are slow people, they take up too much space and barely move. How can I be friends with not only a lazy person but also someone who is slow, they’d drive me insane.

And this is why I can’t be friends with Piggy.

What it means to be human…

Humans need to communicate, they need to be able to interact and talk to each other.

Humans look for happiness.

Humans want to express their feelings.

Humans like to help others in need.

Humans like to communicate to share and gain knowledge.

Humans need to support.

Humans are violent and mean and even greedy.

Humans hurt other populations because humans are discriminatory.

Humans are vengeful.

Humans are sympathetic and we can share and we can help.

Humans are oblivious when it isn’t happening to us.

Humans can be united by the simplest of things such as dancing.

Humans can find joy.

The novel A Million Worlds With You is a book I would highly recommend to anyone. It taught me that no matter what true love can never been torn apart. That so long as both people in the relationship try they have hope. In the 3rd book of this Firebird series people are trying to destroy the multiverse. Marguerite the main character and her boyfriend Paul are together in almost every single dimension they visit. Even though Paul is hurt and damaged from his past both he and Marguerite try to help him. While trying to save the multiverse they both try to save their relationship. Humans want to be loved and want to help others. This book really showed that in my opinion.

Math 10 week 13 Function VS Relation

How to tell if a relation is a function or not

What is a function? A function is an input that goes to ONE output

In an arrow diagram the easiest way to see if it is a function is to see if one input has more than one arrow to the outputs

In ordered pair see if the same input is in more than one pair

And in a graph do the vertical line test. If a vertical line touches the graph more than once than the relation is just a relation and not a function

Math 10 week 12 X and Y intercept

What is an X intercept? The X intercept is when the coordinate is on the X axel

What is a Y intercept? The Y intercept is when the coordinate is on the Y axel

When given an equation for the values and you want to find the X intercept then the Y value must be 0, and if you want to find the Y intercept then the X value must be 0

Example:

X intercept:

3y = 5x+15

0 = 5x+15

-15 = 5x

-3 = x

(-3,0)

Y intercept:

3y = 5x+15

3y = 15

Y = 5

(0,5)
