Innovation project – Social media campagne

Social Media Campagne For Yemen

by: Nikolay, Alex, Daniel and Daniel

The Beginning

When we first were introduced to Sara Badiei we learned about the many problems facing Yemen. We also realize not many people knew about these issues and these issues were completely new to us. So we started small with creating a twitter account. This account was shared in between me and our group members where we worked together to post information about Yemen hoping someone would take notice. We don’t know if we reached anyone but we learned a lot about awareness and Yemen in the process. We thought the best way to tackle a problem of this magnitude was to spread awareness and get more people invested in helping Yemen.

When creating our twitter account we thought we would get some authenticity and get first hand knowledge on the situation. So we contacted Mr. Yazeed, yemenese educator. Through the painful time difference we ended up getting a skype call with Mr. Yazeed.

With all our work we were able to connect with Mr. Yaseed from Yemen to here his story and shed some light on what we thought was going on. It was pretty shocking now knowing that mostly everything we’ve heard was true.

So with our information we started posting tweets, these tweets consisted of research, questions, thoughts and quotes on the situation in Yemen

In the end we created a brilliant twitter account that is spreading awareness about Yemen and will hopefully continue to inspire bright minds of the future.

What we learned

We learned how to create and tweet on a social media page. I used my research skills and improved them on carefully crafting tweets within the 4 sentence max. The tweets that I had created at first were okay, but after some time when on I really improved the quality of tweet I was producing. I think the connection based learning really worked in this project because through our connection we learned a lot more specific knowledge that we could’t easily find on the internet. This project helped us make connections and tap into their knowledge to help guide us on our projects.

Goals and did we reach them?

I feel like me and my group didn’t make a big impact in people’s knowledge of Yemen but that’s because all new things take time and lots of commitment to take off. Something me and my group lack. But I don’t look at this as a loss because me and my group learned so much, about Yemen and how social media awareness accounts work. We learned all about how hard it is to send a message that people see and listen to. So did we reach our goals? I think so because one of my biggest goals in this project was to create meaningful and thoughtful tweets with research and sources. Something that we have accomplished. The collaboration worked great with people communicating about what to tweet, when to tweet and quality of tweets. I feel we could have improved on the commitment as a whole but it’s hard to do something like that without a clear payout or passion.

  1. I am very proud and impressed with the campaign your group created to address Yemen’s dire situation. You considered what you learned from Sara Badiei from the World Bank and took action. Great to hear that you feel that you have improved in your ability to make the concise informative statements that are need to make a good tweet. I appreciate your honest consideration regarding achieving your goals. If you got an opportunity, what other ideas do you have that might make a difference for the people of Yemen?

  2. Great work! I really like how you guys chose to help those in Yemen by spreading awareness online. A very different idea than the other groups. Your tweets were very eye opening and had good information to get people’s attention about the conflict.
