New Book Cover – “ The Fault In Our Stars”

“ The Fault in Our Stars,” by John Green is about the strong connection between two teenagers, who’re affected by cancer, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters. They’ve met each other in a support group through a mutual friend Isaac, as they talked they got along with their passion for books and immediately felt an attraction towards each other. As the cover for itself seems interesting because it’s very simple. It has a bright blue background that could catch your attention. Along with the blue background, there are also black and white shapes, moreover, are clouds. The clouds are the opposite colour of each other, like Hazel and Augustus with their attitude towards their illnesses. Hazel is more on the pessimistic side as she thinks that she only has a few years left to live, wanting to spend it alone without any harm towards anyone. Meanwhile, Augustus wants to achieve something great, an act of heroism, in his years of living, he’s more optimistic. He was the key to unlock Hazel’s pessimistic and turn her attitude around. As for the yellow, it could symbolize the cancer. It seems to be in the middle of the clouds, but the clouds are still connected towards each other. This would symbolize how strong Augustus and Hazel’s relationship is, despite having an attraction and fearing of hurting the other, they are still in this together throughout the novel. Lastly, the blue background would be the world. The ‘insensitive world,’ where Hazel and Augustus live.

I was inspired by the word ‘star’ as you can see there are stars in the background. I decided to make this cover this way because the large tree symbolizes Hazel’s growth in the novel. Hazel came a long way as in the beginning she never left the house or went out with anyone, but as the story progressed, hazel started to become more open because she met Augustus, who was her light to her darkness. This also explains why there are stars in the dark background. Augustus is the star that lights up hazel’s heart and made her more open. It’s like finding the right key for the right lock, a connection that’s made between the two. Furthermore, there are shooting stars in the back as well, this is because the novel was mainly about the wish that Hazel and Augustus shared, to meet the author of “An Imperial Affliction.” It was romantic, and stars also symbolize romance, so I wanted to cooperate that into the cover. As for the reason why there’s a reflection underneath Hazel and Augustus, is because I wanted it to be more ‘spiritual.’ when the tragedy happened near the end of the novel, I wanted to make the readers feel that Hazel and Augustus will always be together whether it’s physically or spiritually. This is like their own spiritual world where they can be free from their problems, but it could also symbolize the space between life and death since Hazel and Augustus both have cancer and don’t have much time to live and thrive.
