A private Experience is a short story written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This story is told about a bond that is created between two woman, one Christian, and one Muslim, while they are hiding in an abandoned store from a riot between their two groups. The meaning behind the story is telling the reader that two groups can get along during conflict, and peace can be created. For an example of the meaning of the story, people make assumptions about one another based on their race and religion, but Chika realizes from her time with the woman that at the end of the day those assumptions don’t matter. Chika was shown kindness by a woman that had a religion who was fighting Chika’s religion. People cannot assume what a person is like just because of their religion and differences, without actually getting to know the person. For my mind map I chose to use a bright red background to symbolize fire, chaos and the slaughter that is taking place during the riots. Red is also a symbol of blood and made me think of the killing in the story.  I used a bold, black font because it made me think of the burning and the smoke that Chika describes and the charred bodies. The font is strong, and eye catching with the red background and has a feeling of destruction, chaos and the horrible things that happened during the riots. It also feels like the colours symbolize the conflict that is happening between the Igbo Christians and the Hausa Muslims.  I chose to use photographs because it makes the images realistic. Some of the images available in Canva looked like cartoons and I didn’t like how they looked because it didn’t make the map look serious for what the story is about. The story shows a good perspective on what it is like in other countries and war between two different groups. The mind map includes images that I believe work best for each key term in short story literature. I added key terms such as Characterization, Theme, Plot, Setting, Symbolism, Point of View and Conflict. Each term has a quote from the story that relates to that term. I think these terms are the most important for this story because they show the most significant aspects of the story, and main parts of the story unlike other terms. I have split my mind map up into different slides so that not everything is crammed all on one page, which would make it messy. This allows the reader and anyone who reads my mind map can have a clear understanding of what is on it and understand the aspects of the story. These points of my mind map give me a clear understanding of the story’s main parts and key aspects, and the story itself. Like mentioned, I have tried to include and come up with themes, and colours as well as fonts to fit the theme of the story. The animation I have chose for my mind map is a tumble like motion that occurs when each slide shows up on the screen if you were to present the mind map. I chose this animation because I think it fits well with the riot part of the story because the riot shows a tumble of commotion and war between two religious’ groups.
