Math 9 Final Review 2017

In this post, I will be explaining how to solve equations. To be able to solve equations, you must first understand BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction). BEDMAS is used to remind people of the order the terms of an equation are solved in. You may also need to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide exponents. For this post, I will be using * (the asterisk/star symbol) to represent multiplication, this is to prevent confusion between multiplication and variables.

Let’s start off with a simple equation:

To begin we’ll use BEDMAS to figure out what term we need to solve first.

Next we need to subtract 100 from each side

Then we divide each side by 2

That leaves us with x=10, which is our answer. Now let’s try a more difficult equation that contains every component of BEDMAS.

First, we need to do the term in the brackets.

Next, we’ll solve the exponent.

Now we divide

Next, we multiply

Then we add 25 to each side

Finally, we divide each side by 180

Our answer is x=2.

A useful tip for solving equations is to always simplify when possible.

11.4 Misleading Statistics

It doesn’t really affect me that much, but it could affect me and others in certain circumstances. It could affect me and others because they could unintentionally use my name or someone else’s name, which could lead to confusion, something which is discussed in the article. It could also influence my political opinions and other people’s political opinions. The article itself can affect people because the title is a little bit click-bait because it makes you think that these fake Facebook accounts are directly affecting politics, even though it’s just some fake accounts that give political opinions, and are friends with former politicians.

11.3 Probability in Society

I decided to study a survey/community vote conducted by The Valve corporation on  to decide which games on their gaming platform/gaming application were the considered the best in certain categories. Steam users were able to cast their votes between December 22, 2016 and January 2, 2017. The population sampled were Steam users, and the type of sample was voluntary response. The influencing factors were that there were 5 choices for each category, and they were popular games, but there are some games that are less popular but would have fit better than some of the choices that were given. Most of the games that won were competitive, could be replayed multiple times, were difficult/challenging, and/or games that had you playing with others. In my opinion, most steam users enjoy playing online games with others, and/or enjoy playing games that can be replayed multiple times, or that never end.

Math 9 McArthur 2017 Data Analysis Thoughts

  1. I think statistics help companies improve their service and their products, help schools to improve aspects and to improve education for students, and influence people’s opinions and their decisions.
  2. I learned that statistics are important for influencing people’s decisions and their opinions on different topics/subjects.
  3. Statistics can be used to make a topic sound dramtic, sound interesting, can be used to manipulate people, they can be misleading, invalid, full of lies, and unreliable, and/or vague.

Math 9 11.1 Factors Influencing Data Collection

The article I read was The Quebec prohibition Referendum in 1919.

When I first read the article, I thought about how the referendum was not very valid and that the timing and the subject would affect the results. After learning about Influencing factors, I now think that the results were affected by the fact that this was the prohibition era, and because the people wanted to be able to at least drink some alcohol, just to enjoy themselves. In the future, when reading and interpreting survey data, I’ll make sure to look out for influencing factors, and other things that would decrease the validity and reliability of the survey.
