Science 10 Wonder Project

Is there more intelligent life (not bacterial) anywhere other than Earth?

Yes, I think there is more life on other planets besides Earth. There are over 200 billion discovered galaxies with 100 billion planets in each. Out of all those planets and galaxies there aren’t any planets that are capable of holding life like Earth does? There has already been planets discovered that have the requirements that life would need to live but, there has been no life found on these planets but, there is one planet that is the most suitable for living on, this planet is called Kepler-452b. This planet has a mass that is 5 times bigger than Earth. There are also 60 billion other planets that can support life but, they are way too far for us to really examine and see in depth to find life. There was also an attempt to communicate with any other life beyond Earth. In the 1950’s an astronomer named Frank Drake sent radio waves to space to see if any other life could take those radio waves and send them back, but nothing was returned. The universe started with the big bang and then life started by the remains of stars after they blew up. If most of the elements in our bodies were made by stars, couldn’t those elements start life on another habitable planet? Also to add on to how much we haven’t figured out yet, scientists haven’t even discovered all of the ocean which is on our Earth, now imagine how much more there could be outside of our Earth. Even though we don’t have lots of evidence of life on different planets, I believe there is so much more than we know just due to the fact that our universe is huge and there’s probably more beyond our universe as well. I hope in the future we are able to find something to prove there is more life on a different planet because it would be really cool knowing we aren’t the only living creatures in the entirety of space and who even knows how big space really is.

In The Woods Project

The invasive plant I found is called the European Blackberry bush. I also found a species of black slug (Arion ater) that are insects that evolved from snails. Black slugs are native to Western and Central Europe but they got to other countries by hiding in soil that was being transported by boat. Slugs adapted to their new habitat in Canada by changing to darker colors to be able to camouflage on darker surfaces like trees and dirt. Slugs in Canada are more of pests in Canada than anything. They damage the environment by eating the leaves and kill crops by eating the seedlings. There are many ways to control these slugs if they are causing trouble in your garden such as sprinkling broken eggshells on the soil. This keeps the slugs away because they are smart enough to identify that the edges of the broken eggshell are sharp and they avoid it. Another way you can keep them away is by placing coffee grounds in your soil. They hate the smell of coffee grounds and stay far away from the smell.
