Life is About Experiences

(This project is based on one of my life experiences in a written paragraph that I eventually turned into a SWAY)

While the white puffy cumulus clouds zoomed across the summer sky above Maui, Hawaii, the beach was occupied by relaxed and delighted tourists in every sandy corner. To my right, the vibrant water of the ocean, that resembled a blue rainbow, looked as if it was stretching on forever, like outer space. I took off my dusted, grey flip flops and as I walked slowly along the stunning beach, the fine, white sand scorched the bottoms of my feet. To my left stood a bright, yellow hut with a railed ramp, big windows, and ATVs surrounding the base. Lifeguards occupied this small hut and their signs warned us of strong, deadly currents and dangerous shore breaks, which made me a little nervous. As I gazed over into the ocean, I saw people’s heads bobbing in the glistening water like ice cubes in a cold, summer drink. My mind, completely free of consuming thoughts, was carefree and relaxed as the heat of the sun’s strong rays beamed on my skin like water crashing on me in a shower.  My mother, sister, and I found a patch of sand covered in the shade of a tall, tropical palm tree by a quiet and empty part of the beach, and I sat down on my warm, coarse, baby blue beach towel and lathered my dry, tan skin with sunscreen. Rubbing the cold, thick, and slippery sunscreen on me, the intense, white light from the sun briefly blinded me. My quirky older sister Tia and I strolled towards the ocean in front of us, while the cool, heavy breeze whooshed through our dried out, brittle, brown hair, and the floral scent of Hawaiian flowers filled the air. When we drew closer, the water sprayed against our legs as the huge, strong waves rolled, curled and crashed onto the sandy shoreline, and created small bubbles as they landed. As they creeped up closer and closer, they pushed up against the shore like they were searching for something to grab and drag into the depths of the ocean. The wet, cool, and darker sand tickled my toes as I walked into the water. My sister yelped as the sturdy waves crashed against her legs, and the strong current pulled her into the water. She laughed loudly and I followed her into the blue water as waves caressed my legs. The warmth of the ocean water climbed up my body and then my ears were flushed with the giggles of the young children swimming next us. A massive wave came hurling toward Tia and I, and even though we jumped with all of our strength to keep our heads above water, it splattered on my cheerful face and my eyes stung and burned like I was cutting onions. We floated for about another hour, allowing the salt to soak into our skin like sponges while being carried, pulled, and tossed back and forth by the compelling waves. A mini, adorable, yellow Labrador sprinted into the waves and joined in on our swim. He paddled, jumped, leaped, and splashed my sister and I while he barked and smiled with bliss. My beautiful sister’s face glowed with joy, and her eyes sparkled with pleasure in the lustrous sunlight while she played with the energetic puppy. Suddenly, I got exhausted so we turned around and timed our escape perfectly from the waves’ grabbing arms. Crawling out of the water quickly, we avoided being forced back in the colossal ocean by its waves.  We got back on the shore and the hot, pleasant sand stuck to our wet, sticky feet. Around us tourists and their families sun tanned and little, screaming children built lopsided sandcastles. As I look back at our shady patch, my mother, under her blue striped umbrella, sitting in a green lawn chair waves vigorously at me like a flag in the wind.  Tia and I tried to run to my joyful mother, but with every step we took our feet sank into the thin sand, forcing us to use more and more effort with every motion. After, we arrived at our cooler, shady patch of sand where my mother sat, we laid side by side on our cute matching baby blue beach towels. I reapplied the coconut scented sunscreen while Tia told my mother about the puppy, and then the birds squawked in the picture-perfect sky. I relaxed, listened, and soaked in the last rays of the setting sun. All the tourists at the beach, including me, were filled with glee, while we watched the white, milky clouds fade away during the sunset in the summer sky of Maui.
