Penny Lab

Conclusion:

This experiment investigated… The amount of water droplets that would fit on a clean and soap covered penny with our spilling over.

In order to study the problem… We tested the experiment on both the clean and soap covered pennies 4 times, calculated their averages and drew and described the experiment.

Results showed… That the clean penny held much more water droplets than the penny covered in soap. The soap covered penny held the water droplets flat while the clean penny held the water droplets in a dome like shape.

This proved the hypothesis that if the penny is clean, then the penny will keep more water drops than the testing liquid will, was supported because I thought that the clean penny would hold more water droplets and it held about 28.25 more drops more than the soap covered penny on average.

To extend the experiment we could have tried dipping the penny in different liquids. For example, we could have dipped the penny in oil, which would have a very different effect than the clean or soap covered pennies would have.

If we repeated the experiment we would need to make sure that the penny was absolutely dry and that we had more paper towels. Also, it would be good to know how much water came out per drop to get a more accurate trial.

Staying Safe at Work

  1. 3 things I will do to keep myself safe at work are…
  2. 1 thing I will do to keep others safe at work is…

1.) Three ways I will keep myself safe at work is by saying no to dangerous work, make sure I know how to use any machinery safely and properly and I will report any odd activity that could put either the customers, my co-workers or I in danger.

2.) Something I can do to keep others safe in a work place is making sure that my hands are clean and that I am wearing gloves. I work in a place where I handle food all the time and the customers deserve to have food the has not been contaminated in any way.

Float Your Boat – Experiment

CHALLENGE:

Make a boat that can float in water and hold the most amount of pennies.

PROBLEM:

Not having enough materials or buoyancy to hold the boat above water.

HYPOTHESIS: (Use an “If…then…”statement)

If the boat has equal weights on its sides and is not too heavy, then the buoyancy of the boat will increase and it will hold more pennies.

IDEA FOR ORIGINAL DESIGN: Insert image and write a description explaining your thinking/reasoning as to why you chose that particular design
We will cut the marshmallow in fours to create extra floating device and they will be stuck in the four corners of the boat. Then, we will fold the edges of the tin foil to create walls. Next we will tuck the straws into the walls of the boat to give better support to the walls. We will use the tape when it is needed.

HOW MANY PENNIES DID YOUR BOAT HOLD?
Our Boat held 89 pennies

WHAT WOULD YOU KEEP OR CHANGE ON YOUR BOAT DESIGN IF YOU WERE TO DO THIS AGAIN? (saying nothing is not an option)
If I could change anything I would have made the sides much taller. The boat could have held lot more pennies but the sides were folded down too low.
