Skype Chat Blog Response

On January 15th, we had a Skype call with a woman named Charis Walko, who is a stem cell researcher in Vancouver. Charis has her degree with stuff relating to liver stem cells and has done multiple drug screenings. Throughout the Skype chat she explained on what her job is. One of the things she shared was that when they take DNA and remove a mutation making it heathy. Even though i was not there for the Skype chat, from asking people, it sounded very interesting. I would have loved to have been there. I think this Skype chat would have been a benefit towards me for the unit test because, if i had any questions, or anything i was uncertain of, i would have been able to ask her.

A question someone asked her was,

“What types of diseases can be treated with Stem Cells”?

Her answer,

“Lots and lots of disease can be treated, and right now there are about 80 diseases that can be treated with stem cells, and most of them are associated with the blood disorders, like lukemia or embroyonic. Blood is one of the stem cells which is actually easy to put back into the body. In order to come up with other diseases that can be treated, is a really long process to show that it is safe in humans. Other then blood disorders what can currently be treated with stem cells is also cornea disease, but there is lots of research to try and see if we can renew muscle, or neurons in the brain.

Another question asked was,

“What was the biggest controversy with stem cells”?

Her answer,

The embryonic stem cells controversy, which is the research of embryo cells. Most people question the ethics of this and believe the research is done involving the development and destruction of human embryos.

I very much enjoyed hearing what people learned throughout this Skype chat, which i also learned myself!

The Life of a Genetic Mutation

I am a genetic disorder, in which a third copy of Chromosome 21 is present in my cells. I am called Down Syndrome. I’m created because of an abnormal cell division, when the egg and sperm first meet. Parents of the child i have affected, are typically genetically normal, an extra Chromosome copy of me occurs by random chance. Life span for people who i affect can range from 50 to 60 years old, with proper heath care. The affect i can have on the body may be different then other people with me. Effects i can bring to the host are, Thyroid problems, hearing problems, congenital heart disease, eye problems, seizure disorder, bone, muscle, nerve, or joint problems, leukaemia or other cancers, immune system problems, development delay, and mental retardation. I, Down Syndrome can affect the hosts life in many ways. I make it longer for them to learn, understand, and slower for them to learn how to talk and take care of themselves. For some i make it hard for them to speak and hear, but in the time we live in now, people are getting past the fact that i have made a challenge on their body and are living happy normal lives.

During this project, i didn’t need to search up a lot of information, most of it i found all on one site. What I searched to collect information were, “What causes Down Syndrome”?, “Down Syndromes effects” , “How does Down Syndrome have an affect on that persons life”?, and “Down Syndrome”. Another way i found some information was, that i watched some Youtube videos about Down syndrome, and left one i peronally found the most interesting and inspiring. I learned a lot about Down Syndrome from this project, in which i found very interesting. What i found the most interesting was that having a child that has Down Syndrome can come by chance. I found the process of this challenge was quite simple, all you needed was good question to search, and it should have been easy to find your information.

This is a model of a double helix. The strands linked by hydrogen bonds form a spiral configuration that holds the DNA. We used marshmellows to reoresent these four bases,

“Taming of the Shrew” Stop Motion Induction Scene Project

 

Our project is based upon the play, “Taming Of The Shrew” written by William Shakespeare. Our group includes Molly, Sama, Savannah, and Mario. Molly and Sama filmed and directed it, sama wrote the narration, Molly wrote this paragraph, Savannah read the narration multiple times after the app kept on crashing, until she got it perfect. And Mario was on prop duty. in the play the induction, meaning the main story was, the characters pulling the prank on Christopher Sly. The inset of the story was when the players were performing a play for Sly and the page. It was the inset of the story because, it was a play inside of a play. In our project we showed induction and the beginning of the inset. We used the stop motion to show a way of creating a scene by using multiple photos. It created a way to show movement, and creativity. Some challenges that occurred during throughout this project was, the stop motion app kept on crashing, and it did not save our narration, and we had to redo all of it. Throughout this project we have learned many words from Shakespearian times, and discovered what entertainment was like back then.

Science Skype Interview

In our science class today we had a Skype conversation with a girl names Tanya Harrison, who is a scientist and geologist who works with outer space, mainly The planet Mars. Our class was able to ask her some questions throughout the call.

The questions that my group came up with was,

“Would you ever consider space travel, and why?”

“Why do you enjoy what you do?”

“What was one of your favourite projects you have worked?”
The question i asked her was,

“Why do you enjoy what you do?”

Tanya’s answer,

“My favourite part is, that my job used to be to take pictures of Mars everyday, i would pick what the cameras would take pictures of on the orbitor of the surface, and those images would come back in the coarse of the next week, and i was often the first person on the entire planet to see that piece of Mars of that camera resolution, which is kind of an exciting thing to know that know one else has ever seen that before.”

What i learned.
-Mars is the only planet that is possible to find life, due to the finding of water.
-Rovers can cost 7 thousand to 1.2 billion dollars.
-It is difficult to bring a rover back from Mars because, how heavy it would be.

Q.”Who was the first to send a rover to Mars?”
A.”Nasa was the first to successfully send a rover to Mars.”

Q.”Would you ever consider space travel, and why?”
A.”Due to me being claustrophobic, i could not consider space travel, but i would love to orbit earth.”

Q.”How long does it take to make a rover?”
A.”it takes about 8-10 years for Nasa to complete one.”
i found it very helpful and interesting, speaking and asking her question about space because, this is a topic she learns about everyday and does for a living.

Observation: During this experiment, we noticed that it is possible to create electricity with fruits or vegetables. The items that we used were, two pears, one apple, and two oranges. During the experiment, we tried all the fruits together in the circuit, but we could never managed to get the volts to pass one. We were never able to light the light bulb, because we didn’t creat enough volts to light it.

Results: What we noticed in the experiment is that the pear and the apple created the strongest charge of electricity when in the same circuit, but they still couldn’t light the lightbulb. Whenever we tried the oranges it would creat a negative charge.

In my opinion i wouldn’t think that fruits and vegetables are the best source of energy, how many fruits and veggies’ would you need to power a house? There are better option which are also a source of clean energy, for example a Hydro-Dam.

Q. If your bulb doesn’t glow, why not?

Our lightbulb didn’t glow because we didn’t create enough volts, to light a lightbulb.

Q. How can i use this in my everyday life?

I don’t necessarily think you could typically use this type of electricity in your daily life because it can only power so little, and in our life we use electricity almost 24/7.
