Chemistry in My World

Science COL Project Part UNO

A few days back, my partner and I decided to do the project on a gaming mouse, specifically the Logitech G203 and these are some questions we had.

  1. What is the Logitech G203 made out of?
  • The Logitech G203 mouse is made with a material called Polyvinyl Chloride. They use Polyvinyl Chloride because it is durable lasts up to 25-40 years and is easily melted down and moulded into your desired shape. Polyvinyl Chloride also does not stain or scratch which is a must for gaming mice. The smooth surface makes it easier for people to clean and take care of the mouse. The polyvinyl chloride used on this mouse, however, is only used to protect the CPU and wiring inside of the mouse itself.

2. What elements make up polyvinyl chloride?

The chemical formula for polyvinyl chloride or PVC is (C2H3Cl)n. The combination of chlorine and ethylene to make the vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Molecules of VCM are polymerized to form PVC resin, to which appropriate additives are incorporated to make a customized PVC compound.

3. Is it harmful to the environment?

  • Despite being a very durable, efficient and common plastic we use every day, it is the most environmentally damaging plastic and cannot be recycled. We use PVC in our everyday lives and that much plastic is definitely affecting the environment around us. The PVC lifecycle and its production, use, and disposal results in the release of toxic, chlorine-based chemicals. These toxins are building up in the water, air and food chain.

Some basic information about PVC is:

Colour – The colour of PVC is normally white unless added colour.

Melting point – 185 F

Who discovered it – Eugen Baumann

How was it discovered –  PVC was synthesized in 1872 by German chemist Eugen Baumann after extended investigation and experimentation. The polymer appeared as a white solid inside a flask of vinyl chloride that had been left on a shelf sheltered from sunlight for four weeks

 Part Dos Of My Project

 1. What questions did you need to research in order to create your post? – Ask

While doing the project, I asked what the mouse was made out of, what elements made up pvc, if it was harmful to the environment, what colour it was, what the melting point, who discovered it and how was it discovered.

 2. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project? – Acquire –

The only familiar tools I used for this project were Wikipedia, Britannica, and Google.

 3. What was the process you used to investigate the topic? – Analyze –

My partner and I decided and a topic together and decided to keep building off that topic. Since my partner wasn’t here for the majority of the project, we couldn’t really communicate too much on what to do about the project and discuss how we should do it or how to plan what we do.

 4. How did you verify and cite the information you found?  – Analyze

To verify my information, I ensured that more than two sites supported these ideas about my element. To cite my information, I took all the sites I had noted down on a spare document and plugged them into the trusty citation machine.

 5. How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better? – Assess –

The process was a little bumpy but I pushed through and completed it. I think something I could’ve done better was to communicate with my teammate a little more when we still had class time. I think I could’ve also thought of a topic much sooner and had more done by today.
