Digital Footprint

  1. How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

Your digital footprint is vital to maintaining a good reputation not only online, but in person too. If your digital footprint isn’t friendly and appropriate and is filled with offensive and crude content, it could alter your chances of being accepted for a job or college. If they were to look at your digital footprint online and see that it holds negative photos and/or videos, it is likely that they would be reluctant to accept you. Therefore, it is always good to make sure that your digital footprint is clean and safe, so it doesn’t affect your future.

2. Describe at least three strategies you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

There are multiple ways to make sure your digital footprint is good. For example, you can always make sure to think before you post something. Things like, “What will other people think if I post this?” or “Can this negatively influence how I am seen to others?” are always great questions to ask yourself before posting. It is also a good idea to keep your follower count exclusively to people you know. If someone wants to follow you and they are a stranger or don’t have at least one mutual friend that you know well, you shouldn’t let them be able to see your posts. Finally, you should keep your accounts private. By doing this, you can pick and choose who has access to your accounts and random people you don’t know can’t look at your content and use it.

3. What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that once you share something, whether it be a post or a picture on a group chat, it can never be undone. Even if you archive or delete it, someone could easily screenshot it and use to against you in not so positive ways. I would pass this information on by giving someone a warning before they post it if they ask me for my opinion.
