Artist Reflection
What do you try to do as an artist?
As an artist I try to express my thoughts on different subjects that are important to me. I try to be honest with how I view the world. Being honest in art does not mean I’m going to draw or paint in realism, but express an honest opinion and perception from where I’m standing in the world. As an artist I’m constantly looking for ways to express my creativity and learn. I also try to experiment with new mediums and art styles.
What is art to you?
Art to me is a creative outlet and a way to remove myself from the glare of technology. I also believe it’s an important skill because it teaches you to effectively and critically look at the world. It also can be whimsy and fun, and allow yourself to explore the world outside of technology. This is also why I don’t like using technology. Technology in art removes me from the world and into a technological world, a world more about skill then fun.
What is the responsibility of an artist?
In my opinion, it’s the responsibility of the artist to explore and teach all the different parts of life artistically. The artist could be more political like Banksy or trying to show people the beauty of the world through their eyes like Van Gogh.
What are your future plans as an artist?
Honestly, I’m not making many plans about my future art. I will continue to develop my skill over my life time, but I’m not planning due dates or assignments. I’m going to create when I feel a burst of inspiration or I have a vision in my head. I don’t plan on going to university or collage specifically for art, but I want to keep it in my life.
Reflect on which assignment you found must successful and why?
I found the last project, the side portrait, the most successful because I explored a few different ways to draw. I feel proud of the piece because I was very afraid of drawing a face. Drawing a good face feels to me like the big final boss in the pencil medium because faces are all very unique and detailed, and I believe I captured some detail of the person I drew. I was also capable of changing my plan because in my thumbnails for the drawing I did not include the crown at first and I did not account for how difficult a single tear would be.
Which assignment was least successful and why?
I would say that the tree drawing was my least successful because I wasn’t capable of fully realizing what I had wanted to create. I wanted to create a sea and sky inspired by Van Gogh’s Stary Night, but I was worried it would take too much away from the tree it’s self, so I didn’t do it. Now looking at the drawing it feels bland and uninteresting to look at.
Any final thoughts?
I learned lot’s about different types of mediums and certain mediums (like conte) I had never heard of before. I learned more techniques for each of the mediums. I am disappointed that we couldn’t do an acrylic because I’m not skillful at painting or mixing colours, but there’s a pandemic going on outside. That didn’t affect the class too much for me because I just really love art.
