This article, from the Huffington Post, highlights the evident racism against Muslims immigrating to Canada. I chose this article because it describes situations that are alarmingly similar to some of the racially motivated situations in To Kill a Mockingbird. The article has this quote, from Phillippe Couillard, “We have those two devils within our society: racism and xenophobia. They exist.” In TKAM, xenophobia doesn’t really exist, however the devil that is racism, is alive and well. The white citizens of Maycomb are generally a pretty racist bunch. When the low down Bob Ewell goes up against the proud and honest Tom Robinson, the town is quick to judge.
