Irrational Number: i

For this research assignment, I decided to look into the symbol i.  i is defined the square root of -1. It is an imaginary number, and an irrational number, given that negatives don’t have square roots, nor does the number one. This symbol appears in mathematical equations, including the constant ‘Euler’s Identity’ which is e^iπ+1=0. The mathematician noted to have discovered these numbers is Heron of Alexandria. At this time, i and other imaginary numbers were thought of as useless. It was not until the work of Euler and Gauss that this number was accepted in mathematics.
