Where I’m From

I am from cleats, from Adidas and Nike

I am from the plain, brown, discreet homes that line the roads.

I am from the trees, the short scratchy grass in my backyard.

I am from church on Christmas, and wiry hair, from Gwyn, and Brenda, and MacGregor alike.

I am from control freaks and dreamers.

From ‘Annunciate your Words’ and ‘Don’t talk so much’

I am from atheists, forever skeptical.

I’m from the UK to China, chocolatey cookies and repulsive fruit cake.

From the time the coffee dripped, the sour cream on bagels, and our personal rent-a-dog.

I am from mothball scented scrapbooks and pencil sketches, war heroes and models.
