For a Wedding: A Drinking Song, W.B. Yeats
This poem would be good for a groom’s poem to his bride because it is a beautiful and poetic way to express his love for her. It completely represents the feeling of love and happiness that is found at weddings. It shows that love is all that is needed in one’s life, and that the writer has so much love for his partner that simply looking at them causes him to sigh, lovingly. The one aspect of this poem that makes it stand out from all others is that it applies to everyone. It doesn’t give any specifics regarding if a man is reading it, or if a woman is reading it. It doesn’t mention the colour of her hair, or eyes, just that the writer is in love with the person he writes about, so much so that they cause him to sigh, helplessly.
For a Funeral: When You Are Old, W.B. Yeats
This poem appears to be written from the point of view of a passed husband to his wife and talks again about love, but more so in the past. For this reason, it would be the perfect poem for a funeral. It flows, discusses love and life, and forever beauty in the ones you love. When You Are Old perfectly describes past love and is appropriate for remembering those passed. The most important thing about this poem is the feeling that is shown through the writer’s words. He pulls at heartstrings and tugs at tear drops in the powerful words that he conveys. The poem, at first, just seems dismal, but upon reading between the lines is full of love and unfinished declarations of the heart.
For a Love Note: To A Young Girl, W.B. Yeats
When a man writes a love note for a woman, he intends to woo her or to show her how much he cares for her. The poem To A Young Girl, is endearing and lovely and flows to read, and to say it out loud. This poem would be optimal for a love note because it shows love in a short and simple way. The part of the poem that makes it the best for a love note is the opening: My dear, my dear. It starts off like any love note would and clearly defines it as an endearing confession of love. The most important part of the poem is that it shows love in a passive way and pulls the reader into it. The words perfectly fit the scenario of love note writing, as this poem is short, sweet, and beautiful.
I really like the way you worded your paragraphs for your three poems, and your selections of poems were great! I especially loved “To A Young Girl”. It’s so short and sweet. Well done, Megan! 🙂
Really well done Megan! I liked your choice of poems very much. If there was anything to improve on (which was hard to find), try to use different words other than “perfect” or “perfectly”. Just found it can be a tad repetetive. Good job otherwise!
