Wave Interference Lab – Cam, Kelsey, Didi, Maya

Standing Waves: When the waves are being created from either side of the medium interacting almost simultaneously to create standing wave interferences.

Constructive Waves: When the crest from one waves meets the crest from another wave to displace the spring.

Destructive Waves: When the crest and trough on opposite sides of the medium meet the energies combine to rebound or most likely cancel out.

How do noise cancelling headphones use wave interference to eliminate sound?

Noise cancelling headphones use wave interference to block ambient noise on the exterior of your headphones. They mimic the incoming noise to cancel out the waves before entering your headphones, similar to destructive interference waves.

Exploring Waves Lab – Kelsey, Didi, Cam, Maya

Wave Definitions:

  1. Pulse Waves: A non-repeating wave that has a single disturbance.
  2. Transverse Waves: Spring is pulled perpendicularly to the direction that the wave travels, disturbance is at a right angle.
  3. Periodic Waves: A wave re occurring at regular time intervals, requires regularly repeating disturbances.
  4. Longitude Waves: Several turns of the spring are compressed causing a disturbance length wise.
