During this semester I have learned that there are many effects that racism has on humanity. Firstly, racism affects societies, communities, and relationships between people. It creates barriers between groups of people. So instead of uniting as one, we are being separated based on those who are racist, those who aren’t racist, and those of other races. We can see an example of this seperation in Indian Horse when Saul was kicked off a hockey team full of white boys for being Indian. Not only does racism affect societies, but it greatly affects young people. Racism is passed on through generations, so if a child grows up in a racist environment, then they will more than likely end up being racist. We can infer that this is what happened to the Nuns and priests in Indian Horse and Sugar Falls, The victims of this racism obviously also get affected by it. These people if they are targeted by racism, will most likely try to isolate themselves from everyone else around then like Saul did in Indian Horse. This isolation can in turn develop into depression which can lead to suicide, which was also shown in Indian Horse. Racism is a hard thing for to endure because there is no way to stop it or change themselves so that they are no longer victims of it. This inability to change who they are to stop racism from happening to them is a huge cause for their isolation, depression and suicide. After learning much about racism this semester, I am able to better understand how it affects millions of people all around the world. As I move forward and get older, I have made a promise to myself to never discriminate any race or participate in any form of racism. I will always stand up for other people and voice my opinions on racism because I know just how much one person speaking up and using their voice can help.
