Eng9 – Silver Lining

We live right next to a park that has a swimming pool and a baseball field, so most days during the spring/summer, it’s always noisy. Since spring is just starting, that would mean that it would’ve just started, but thankfully it’s all cancelled. Our neighbours are also pretty loud, it seemed as if they had friends over every day. But they’ve stopped too.

I think COVID will change the way we act for a long time even after it’s over because we will all still at the back of our minds think that maybe there’s a chance that it could come back. I think that once this is done, it will leave a positive mark on all of us as we learned to be more careful in gatherings and washing hands.

But swimming and baseball will come back too so that’s not something to look forward to.

The volunteer opportunity I chose was a Speed Watcher

I am researching about volunteering job for the RCMP speed watcher. This could benefit me because saying I volunteered for the police can be a good thing to put on a college application or a job resume. I don’t like driving in the same car my grandma is driving in, and she doesn’t go over the speed limit. So, I can’t even imagine being a kid with someone who’s driving too fast. That’s why I’m passionate about helping the police by making people drive safe speeds.

My job opportunity I chose was to be a House Sitter

I’m researching about getting a job as a house sitter. I could be useful when I eventually leave to get a place of my own and need to take care of me and my responsibilities. I would need to have experience with housework (optional, but recommended) and have a love for dogs. I already have a love for dogs, even though I have never owned one myself, I have friends/family that have dogs and I know most about what it’s like to have a dog. I am also able to do things like collect mail and taking out trash and recycling as I already do these things. Not many things I need to do to apply, I just need to give them a call and hope I got there first. There isn’t even an age limit.

Eng9 Max S This is what I think

Tommy would be an interesting person to know, for he is a very specific kind of person. He likes to learn a lot, so he doesn’t like learning about things he already knows about and wants to learn new stuff. The things he likes learning about is things he’s not so great at so he can do better in that field. He also has good survival instincts and knows how to defend himself/others in case of a big disaster, I think it’s because he takes death very seriously and wants to be prepared for anything. This is what you think of when you hang around Tommy enough, and is why he’d be a good friend.

Part 1:

– Hydro power is one of the cleaner fuel sources, as it is fueled by water and not coal or natural gas. Hydro power makes it easy to go to maximum power fast because hydro power plants can power up the area and are necessary for interruptions such as power outages. They also can change the severity of floods, and increase crops and general water supply.

-The dam will make the water level rise to make it fall in a specific way and the force of that water pushes turbine blades making it spin. The turbine turns that kinetic energy into mechanical energy. A generator connects to the turbine and turns the mechanical energy into electricity.

-Hydro power plants can also damage the environment though, as you’re damming the water and changing the water flow. They’re also expensive to      make; however, you don’t need as much workers are maintenance with hydro power plants. If it’s near a lot of water, then prices would be even lower.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

It has come to my attention that most of this country is still relying on fossil fuels and coal as a power source. So I did the research to find the best way to power this country: hydro power. It is already a thing where I’m from, but it upsets me that not everyone is using it, because hydro power has a lot of benefits. Hydro power is clean and can go to maximum power fast. Which makes it easier for interruptions such as power outages. They also change the severity of floods, crops and general water supply. Even though it comes with some disadvantages such as damaging the environment it’s damming the water and changing it’s flow. They’re also expensive to make, however, cheap to manage. But I still find it better than what people are using now.

Regards, Max

Part 2:

-why is hydro power one of the best options for power?

how does hydro power work?

what disadvantages come with hydro power?

-I googled the questions and searched through the top 4 5 or 6 results

-I asked the questions, looked for the best websites, got what I needed from the websites and wrote it in my own words

-The top 4 or 5 websites usually had similar information, so they all agreed on the same answers.

-I could of improved the time I spent working on it. It took me a while to do and as a result it was late.

A Fresh Look at the Periodic Table

DEFINE

  • The science community has offered you to try to make a new periodic table of our own.  The task at hand is about solution fluency and collaboration fluency.
  • We have been requested to make a new periodic table and customize it to our own.
  • We need to make the new periodic table more ‘hip’ so the youths of this country will be more interested and be more involved.

FINAL STATEMENT: The science community has offered us to try and establish a periodic table of our own. Are we capable of constructing a new and improved periodic table? The task at hand is about the progression of solution and collaboration fluency that was discussed in class with Mr. Robinson.

DISCOVER

  • How are we going to separate the elements, for example by atomic number? number of protons etc.
  • How can we use various colours and shapes to isolate and order the elements?
  • Which shape will be most efficient for all the information to fit into?
  • Do we have to include every element of the original periodic table?
  • Should we make the new periodic table 3D, digital, or on paper form?
  • Should we group and organize the elements by the family groups?
  • Does anyone know any apps that can help us do this assignment?
  • What are each of our talents and how can we use it to improve our periodic table?
  • Should we consider ordering the elements by their physical or chemical properties?

FINAL STATEMENT: (the questions above)

DREAM

  • We need to add and keep all of the atomic #, atomic mass, ion charges, symbol, and the name.  We could arrange it differently by ordering the elements by number protons or electrons for example one row being all elements with seventy protons or under. We could use a sphere because it gives us more freedom in how we can arrange the information.

FINAL STATEMENT: We can utilize spheres to give us more freedom on how we arrange the information. We desire to keep the atomic number, atomic mass, ion charges, the symbol, and the name on the sphere. The categories can be spread between the families or the periods. Our periodic table will be the same as the original, it will just be in sphere form.

DESIGN

FINAL STATEMENT: We desire to assemble a solar system with planets that obtain the elements inside of them. The planets can open up into quarters and it will have layers that have the information of each element. The different planets will be the categories of the element families (alkali metals, halogens, noble gases, etc.). Hydrogen will be the moon (apart from the other planets). We will base the size of each planet by the number of elements there are in each category. We will try to have names for each planet for more creativity and for labels. We will use the sun for transition metals because it has the greatest number of elements in it and dwarf planet for Metalloids because it has the least number of elements. We think that grouping the elements by its families was the best choice for our plan because we wanted a decent number of planets to make a solar system.

DELIVER

FINAL STATEMENT: Our periodic table is a model of the solar system. Firstly, the sun is a star for the transition metals. We chose the sun because it has the greatest number of elements in it. Next, we have the twin planets who are planets representing the Lanthanides and Actinides. They had the same number of elements, so we made it into twin planets. For the next one, we have the metals. Then, the noble gases. We also have a dwarf planet for the Metalloids. The Metalloids are in a dwarf planet because it has the least number of elements in it. The next three planets are Halogens, Alkali Metals, and Alkaline Earth Metals. Our final one is the moon, which represents Hydrogen. We decided to isolate Hydrogen by itself because it is the first element on the table. Each planet (category) will be opened in half so that everything inside can be seen. There are pictures of the elements applicable for the category. Each element has the information of the atomic number, the mass, ion charges, the symbol, and the name. We didn’t add any names because with the names, we felt that it could’ve been confusing to find the group of elements that you were looking for. We decided to keep the labels as the family group the elements were in.

DEBRIEF

FINAL STATEMENT: We revised back on the process it took us to come up with a plan, and we were proud at how we really worked as a group and made the most of each of our capabilities and valuable skills. We felt that our periodic table was unique. All three of us combined our ideas together and came up with an exclusive plan for our final result. As a group, we could’ve improved on starting the design process sooner. For us, the design process took the most amount of time and because we had a due date, we tried our hardest to make the planets at the end look nice but have the necessary information. A road bump we had along the way was that we had to regain the memory and think back on how to use google sketch up. It’s been a couple years, so we forgot how to use it, but we searched some instructions and remembered how to use it. We chose google sketch up because most of us learned how to use it before and we just had to think back on how to add pictures and create spheres. At the end, we decided on the planet because when we combined all of our ideas together, that was the obvious choice on the best outcome.

7. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so? It will be busier the older people will get.
Other question (s):                                                                                                                                                                                                                How long would you like to keep this job: As long as possible, the rest of their career

(My host’s work is at their computer, so they just took a screenshot)

Student Reflections:
1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):
a) Working at home (I could do house work)
b) The flexibility (I could take breaks)
c) The job security (It won’t be replaced by robots)
2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
a) Listening to peoples medical problems
b) I’d get distracted working from home
c) Working alone (I like talking to other people)
3. Is this job for you? Why or why not?                                                                                                                                                                                    This job isn’t for me because I know I would definitely get distracted, and listening to people’s medical issues would be very unsettling. Even though working at home would be nice, not talking to anyone for most of the day is going to drive me crazy.
4. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high
school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).                                                                                                                                                            TOKTW is a good way for kids to know what they’ll need to know to get the career they want, because us children don’t have much knowledge of what it’s like. And knowing the steps that out host took to get to the job will be similar if not the same to what we’ll be doing.
