Why We Should Study the Humanities.

The humanities are known to many as a “Useless” degree. Educated people or people in society have always known that a humanities degree or education is a useless accomplishment in which you find no success in, truly what does that say about society? In her January, 2018 article, Devaluing a Humanities Education Ultimately Devalues Humanity Itself, writer Mandy Pipher, mentions that “Getting a degree in English tends to be considered, at best, a youthful self indulgence,” A degree in English or other subjects relating to the humanities is often known as a endeavor that will get you as some would say a frivolity article on your wall and a series of unemployment. A video by Margarita G called Why we (don’t) study the humanities talks about the film “Dead Poets Society.” In dead poet society, a film from 1989, Robin William(John Keating in the film) states “We don’t read and write poetry because its cute, we read and write poetry because were members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion.” Poetry or even many other relating topics are what defines humanity, it is how we show our passion, Williams also states, “Medicine, Law, Business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life, poetry, Beauty, Romance, Love, these are what we stay alive for,” William claims that Medicine, law, business, etc. are essential for humanities survival, but humans can’t live without and actually  live for, poetry. I agree with Williams since you can have passion for those degrees and find love within that way of life, on the other hand, he is also saying that humans live for poetry and can find if not more but a passion for poetry. The argument for the humanities is that you will find a path of unemployment from a humanities degree but that is partly false. In her April, 2019 article. Why Worthless Humanities Degrees May Set you up for Life. Writer Amanda Ruggeri claims in her research that the 3 most wanted “soft skills” were creativity, persuasion, and collaboration. And one of the “hard skills” were people management. With humanities education you learn all these skills and become elite in them. This sets you up for future jobs because you have already obtained very important skills which you will use in other jobs in the future. A humanities degree isn’t entirely useless, it will give you skills to preform in jobs, although it won’t give you a credible degree to be hired in most jobs.
