Lately I have been thinking about waste, mainly food waste. I want you to think about the food you usually eat. Now imagine how much packaging has been used for that. Now what is the packaging made of. You can tell a lot about food by the package it comes in. Packaging is an amazing way to store food. not only can you keep the food clean, you can also keep everything it touches clean. However this amazing way to store does have some down sides. the problem is that packaging for food is usually plastic, which would be fine if it did not touch the actual food. Because plastic can be recycled unless it has been contaminated. Do you see the dilemma here. Now you are stuck with a bunch of contaminated plastic, and there is only one place to put it. The garbage. Now I want you to picture how much of the food that uses this packaging you consume. Judging by how much garbage we dump a year it is probably a lot. Now times that by every person in the world and then you can finally comprehend how much of a problem this is. The world uses so much plastic and dumps so much waste that it is not even funny. I mean if one species can single handedly create a literal island out of trash, you know there is a problem. However this is not the end. While there is a lot of problems with waste management they are fixable. If we reduce the overall amount of plastic we use there is a way to get rid of our waste problem. Plastic bio degrades in 1000 years, which is a long time but not forever. There is always a solution to a problem we just have to find it.
