Found Poem

The process of creating the poem normal consisted of a lot of thinking. I first took words or phrases out of the past emails I’ve received after spring break. After I’ve found the words or phrases I want, I take out all the unnecessary words such as, the, but, and. Once I got the words I wanted it was time to put it all together. I liked the experience of creating a poem through this process and I thought it was creative how we had to use past email to create the poem.

Short Story – Graphic Novel

The short story the Mountain Journey is based on a trapper named Dave Conroy. Dave undertakes many challenges along the way and based on his choices in the beginning of the story influenced what would happened later on the journey. Dave Conroy’s main goal was to get to the cabin but later sadly died because of the freezing temperature. I chose this story mainly because this was a story I felt deeply connected to and it also taught me a lesson. The actions you do in the beginning of whatever journey you choose in life come back in either a positive or a negative impact.

Community Connections

Dario Fedele | Vancouver Whitecaps FCDario Fedele is currently playing for the whitecaps residency U15 team, he plays striker and scores a decent amount of goals. I chose Dario because he made the team that I would like to join in the future.

Why are you passionate about your job?

I am passionate about my job because playing soccer brings people together who have common interests. Soccer is very fun, competitive for some and some don’t like to play competitive.

What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

During soccer my main obstacle that I’ve faced is injuries. Playing at such a high level of soccer, I’m most likely to get injured, especially because I’m growing very fast.

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

My advice to someone also interested in soccer is to keep working hard even when you think you have quit, you will get past that point of struggle and once you do, keep working working harder to exceed.

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

I would contact other students from riverside, I don’t have to too much time, so maybe not everyone .

Have you ever thought of giving up on soccer?

Honestly once I thought of giving up soccer because I tore my hip flexer when I was 13 and I thought I would never be able to play again, I ended up recovering fully and playing to my best ability.

3 reasons why you started soccer?

I enjoy playing soccer because I get to play a fun game with my friends that I also compete against them in, second reason is because I love being physically strong without working out too much and the last reason is that I’m pretty good too, its fun to play something that your good at.

Gender Equality

What is the article about?

USWNT seeks $66 million in gender discrimination suit against US Soccer. The US women’s national team didn’t get the same amount of money as the men’s national team did.

Who does it involve?

It involves the Women’s US Soccer team players,  Russel Sawyer and the US Soccer Federation

Why did you choose this article?

I chose this article because I play soccer outside of school for a high level, and I was intrigued when I saw the headline of the article.

How does this news article relate to the story we are reading- The Friday Everything Changed?

The news article that I chose in related to the story The Friday Everything Changed. The girls in the story were treated less than the boys, the boys discriminated the fact that they are girls, and that they cant bring the water because they aren’t strong enough. In this article the women on the national US team were payed less than the boys.

The Friday Everything Changed Questions

1. Why are the boys so upset at the idea of girls carrying the water bucket?

The boys feel there more superior than girls, they say that the girls can’t carry the bucket because there aren’t as strong as the big boys.

2. What strategies do the boys use to pressure the girls to give in? How do the girls react?

The boys after the day Alma Niles asked the teacher why girls can’t bring the water, the boys beat her up. Instead of watching her friends came and helped, the boys wouldn’t allow them to play softball. The girls grew stronger and they started sharing their feelings knowing that no one was going to make fun of them.

3. Who is telling the story? What does she think of Ms. Ralston and the conflict over the water? From what point of view is the story being told?

I think from the details given this is a girl speaking about the students in her class. I feel like she is a bystander in the story, she didn’t make a difference but was with the side that thought girls have the right to bring water. The story is being told from a 2nd person.

4. What is the setting? How does the setting intensify the conflict? What kind of conflict is it? Provide evidence for each conflict.

The setting of the story was at a school, with the evidence provided such as bringing water to a school, maple leafs, urban city because they were talking about the other city people, I think they are in the 1950’s. The setting seem to shift toward a softball pitch towards the end when it intensified and the climax occurs. The conflict in the story is person vs society because Alma or the girls are going against the boys and the society proving them that girls can do as much as the boys can.

5. Who Is the protagonist? How do you know?

Alma Niles is the protagonist in the story The Friday Everything Changed. I know because she is the hero in the story for all the girls at the school, she taught them not to let people discriminate them just because they are girls. Alma was brave enough to ask why can’t girls bring the water bucket and that lead to the other girls being inspired, and someone to look up too.

6. In what way has everything changed on that Friday? What is the significance of Ms. Ralston’s action in the last paragraph? What is the message the author is exploring?

On Friday the girls were the first ever to bring the water bucket. When Ms. Ralston said that the girls will bring the water next time, it was a sign of change and a feeling of strength knowing that they have there own rights and can fight for there rights. The author is trying express the fact that girls stood for there rights and everyone no matter gender or racial appearance should have equal rights them everyone else

How do Cells Multiply?

How Organisms Grow

50 to 70 billion human cell die each day, the body must replace the cells. A good example is human skin cells, each day millions are shed. The life of a cell is called a cell cycle and it is dived in three stages. The first stage is Interphase and its job is to carry out the cells normal functions. Interphase is the longest cell cycle stage, its when the cell performs and carries out various functions. In late Interphase the DNA copies itself and this process is known as replication. The process of replication involves several steps, the DNA molecule first unwinds the separates with a help of an enzyme. Next new bases pair with the bases of the original DNA and at the end two new identical DNA molecules are produced. The cell continues to grow and make protein at the end of Interphase in preparation for Mitosis and Cytokineses.

Mitosis

The second stage in the cell cycle is known as Mitoses and is the shortest stage of all of them. Mitoses is where the nuclear contents divide, and two daughter nuclei are formed. It is broken down into four stages prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase also known as ( PMAT ) for short. Early prophase the nucleolus disappears and the spindle fibers, and in late prophase the spindle fibers attach to centromeres of chromosomes. Metaphase the chromosomes align on the eqauter of the cell. Anaphase the spindle fibers pull sister chromatinds to opposite poles of the cell. Lastly telophase is the final stage of Mitosis and its when the spindle fibers disappear and the nuclear membrane forms around each separated set of chromosomes.Image result for mitosis

Cytokineses

The last stage of the cell cycle is known as Cytokineses and it is the separation of the nuclei into two daughter cells. The cell also needs three things to go through the cell cycle. There must be enough nutrients to support cell growth, the DNA must be able to replicate, and the DNA must not be damaged. Mutations in genes can result in out of control cell cycle leading to cancer. Cancer cells have large, abnormal nuclei and are not specialized. The cancer cells attract blood vessels and grow into tumors and those cells from the tumors can break away to other areas of the body.

Meiosis

Meiosis is used when there is exactly half as many chromosomes as the starting cell because of the homologous pair being separated. Its purpose is for one parent cell to split to create two daughter cells. The process of meiosis starts with the homologous chromosomes pairing up and the non-sister chromatids exchange genetic material, the process is known as crossing over. Meiosis 1 produces 4 haploid daughter cells whereas Meiosis 2 produces 2 diploid daughter cells. In meiosis 1 the homologous chromosomes separate and in meiosis 2 the sister chromatids separate.

Sexual Reproduction

Sexual reproduction occurs when gametes ( sperm and egg cells ) meet in the same place at the same time and it is known as mating. Mating allows fertilization to take place, which is the joining of a haploid sperm cell with a haploid egg cell to form a diploid zygote. There are two types of fertilization, external and internal. External fertilization occurs when the sperm and egg cell join outside of the bodies of the parents, it is common with animals that live under water like fish. Internal fertilization happens when the sperm and egg cell join inside body of the female parent, it is common with birds, mammals, flowering and cone-forming plants. Embryonic development takes place during the first eight weeks after fertilization. during it embryo develops and its cells constantly divide.

Asexual Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction occurs when offspring arise from a single organism. There are different types of asexual reproduction, binary fission is when a single cell organisms splitting into identical copies. Budding is when areas organisms undergo mitosis to form an identical organism. Buds sometimes detach to form a separate organism. Fragmentation is when the organism breaks off due to injury, vegetative reproduction are special cells in plants that develop into structures that form new plants identical to the parent. Spore formation is when some bacteria, micro-organism, fungi can form spores.

Advantages and Disadvantages

            Advantages

  1.  Large numbers of offspring are reproduced very quickly
  2.  Large colonies can form that can out-compete other organisms for nutrients and water
  3.  Large numbers of organism creates higher success rate of species surviving
  4.  Energy is not required to find a mate

           Disadvantages

  1.  Disease can destroy large numbers of offspring
  2.  Some methods of asexual reproduction produce offspring that are close together leading to compete for food and space
  3.   Extreme temperatures can wipe out entire colonies

Experience

From the day we started our project our main goal as a class was to help Tim with one of his struggles with Huntington’s. Within the time we were given we managed to have 2 video chats and learned a lot about Tim and his personality. One of his struggles with Huntington’s was being able to get off the couch. Our group decided on creating a couch cane, with our time that we were given we had a unique experience.

Connection

My group was named the “Couch Crushers” and my partner for this project we Gautom and Max. These past weeks we have created a strong relationship with each other and it was very fun working with these two. In Mr. Romanis class we built the base together and we walked to Gautoms house and brought the unfinished couch cane.

Final Product

We have currently finished our couch cane because of extra time given by Mr. Robinson. We had some minor setbacks because of group members not being at school because they were sick, or Mr. Romanis class was locked most of the time we came. At the end we have finished our couch cane and hopefully it’ll help Tim with his struggle of getting off the couch.

What I learned

Ive learned a bit of woodworking while shaping and creating the couch cane for Tim. Gautom taught me some wood tricks, and he was the one who built most of the couch cane. Due to safety me and max couldn’t cut or use any of the machines in Mr. Romanis class, so we watched and supplied Gautom with tools and and wood glue.

I feel I have met my learning goal, I learned how to work with wood and I learned where you can get shovel handles from.

Conclusion

In conclusion our group had minor struggles and I liked working with Gautom and Max. Gautom has skills with woodworking and he was the one that kept on pushing us to finish, Max’s brains helped build on the main idea and like me Max was helping Gautom build the couch cane. I thought I gave a good idea from the start, I kept on building to it and even though none of the group members liked it I tried to make the idea better. In the end my couch cane idea that started have as just building a cane for Tim was approved by Max and Gautom and we started figuring out how to construct it. My communication skills were lacking in this project, we had a instagram chat and in the beginning I wasn’t even checking it till Gautom told me to check it. I was away for a couple of days because of a basketball tournament and didn’t contribute anything of the time I was away for class, I need to improve in still contributing even when away. Lastly I felt the connection-based learning experience was a great way to help Tim out with Huntington’s and taught me a new way to learn.
