Adaptive Technology

In Science we talked to Tim and Nicola and they were speaking to us from Nicola Lodge. Our group question was “do you have a hard time reaching for objects” and Tim replied and said no, we thought about making something that would allow the objects to be easier to reach and grab for. Overall I thought it was a great experience and learned a some interesting facts about Tim and Nicola, I learned that Tim is a talented artist and his artworks are outstanding. As a group our end ideas were designing some object that would help him get off the couch easier because in the video chat Tim mentioned that he had a hard time getting off the couch. We will be creating this invention using the workshop and were thinking of making him a cane to help him walk and easily get off the couch, Tim has a firm grip so it will help him. Our goal is to find out how to actually make a cane and learn the skill of woodworking, we need wood and paint. The downside is that we don’t know if we have permission using the workshop tools and if we are allowed to be in there. In conclusion our end result is for us to create a tool or an object that will help Tim to easily get off the couch.

Nice job, Mateen. I think that it the post would be better if you added some more detail to your explanations. I think your ideas are spectacular but I think for your cane idea if you could somehow stable it to the ground it would make it easier for Tim.

hi mateen, i found your post really interesting to read and loved how you explained your idea for your invention. but i’m not sure if a cane would work so well, because he would put his weight on the cane which might not go as plan. i look forward to working with you in this project!

Thanks for your reflection on our connections-based learning with Tim. That is a good question about using woodworking tools. I would like to see you approach the woodworking teacher with your idea and see what they say. What do you think might be the biggest obstacle to creating some sort of couch-lifting device if you get access to the necessary tools?
