Sam the Athlete
Sam is dreading middle school. He buys new sneaker’s in hopes to fit in, but do the new shoes fit? The short story Sam the Athlete, is written by Stewart McClain. The short story is about a boy Sam, who is trying his best to fit in, when he finally finds his calling on a field hockey team, he is ecstatic and so relieved to have somewhere to belong. Everything is going well for Sam until he realizes he is the only boy on the field hockey team. The short story is about being accepted and knowing that it is good to be different than everyone else. Society frowns upon people who are different than the rest of the crowd. If being unique and separate from the others makes you happy, then no one else should stop you from doing that. Being yourself, remembering who you are, and where you come from should not be taken away from you, it should be embraced. Everyone was brought up differently, therefore everyone’s personality and self-confidence is different, “I don’t set to be different, I set out to be me, people think that’s different” everyone deserves to express their own unique self, whether it is different to others or not. People think making your own path that is separate from others is bad, that is why people think being different is strange and negative. The main idea is that no matter how weird or different you are, if you are happy and being yourself, and happy with it, that’s all that matters.
