LOTF Island Map & Quotes

In this blog post I found 10 quotes in the novel “Lord Of The Flies”, and also a “my opinion” drawing of how the island looks like in the novel.
The platform and meeting place- A dark little boy, not much younger than Piggy, parted a tangle of under-growth, walked on to the platform, and smiled cheerfully at everybody. More and more of them came. Taking their cue from the innocent Johnny, they sat down on the fallen palm trunks and waited. (Golding 14)

The jungle- The fair boy stopped and jerked his stockings with an automatic gesture that made the jungle seem for a moment like the Home Counties. (Golding 1)

Scar- Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar. (Golding 4).

The stream- The pink granite of the next cliff was further back from the creepers
and trees so that they could trot up the path. This again led into more
open forest so that they had a glimpse of the spread sea. (Golding 24)

Mountain- humped near this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore. On either side rocks, cliffs, treetops and a steep slope: forward there, the length of the boat, a tamer descent, tree-clad, with hints of pink: and then the jungly flat of the island, dense green, but drawn at the end to a pink tail. There, where the island petered out in water, was another island; a rock, almost detached, standing like a fort, facing them across the green with one bold, pink bastion. The boys surveyed all this, then looked out to sea. (Golding 26)

Beach- The beach between the palm terrace and the water drew to a point at infinity; and always, almost invisible, was the heat. (Golding 4)

The Coral Reef- Out there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flinked on a coral reef, and beyond that the open sea was dark blue. (Golding 15)

The lagoon- Within the irregular arc of coral, the lagoon was still as a mountain lake blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple. (Golding 4)

Site of signal fire- The space under the palm trees was full of noise and movement. Ralph was on his feet too, shouting for quiet, but no one heard him. (Golding 37)

Site where Ralph and Piggy find the conch- Near to Ralph’s elbow a palm sapling leaned out over the lagoon. In- deed, the weight was already pulling a lump from the poor soil and soon it would fall. (Golding 11)

Walter Mitty Daydream Six

Suddenly, there was a loud “bang!” Walter Mitty looked around to see where the loud noise came from. He was shocked to see that 5 armed men wearing black hoods were running away from the bank holding 10 full pillowcases of money. One of the security guards was lying on the pavement close to the door. He had been shot in his right lung, and he is loosing a lot of blood. The 5 armed men ran to their van and jumped in, not realizing that Walter Mitty was watching them and his wife was screaming. “Walter, what do you think you are doing? Get in the car and let’s get out of here before someone else gets hurt!” said Mrs. Mitty. Walter Mitty doesn’t waste any time and drives away with his wife as quickly as he can. While he is driving on the highway, he sees the criminals in their van being chased by 7 police cars. Mr. Mitty and his wife could see 2 of the criminals sitting in front of the van, while the other 3 where shooting at the police cars from the back of their van.

Walter now starts to imagine himself as an archeologist in a mission to collect 5 ancient golden artifacts that were stolen by 5 Insane gangsters, and want control over a lost ancient city that will give them powers beyond their wildest dreams. “You bad fools, you will not get away with the golden artifacts and rule the lost city!” said Walter. When the gangster’s van starts to pick up speed, Walter gets up close with his Toyota Prius Prime and jumps in the back of the van with a dagger and a bomb. “What was that noise?” said the gangster who was driving. “Walter has jumped onto the back of the van, don’t worry we’ll get him!” said one of the gangsters who was in the back of the van. Walter, now really insolent showed no mercy or fear against the 3 gangsters. At last, Walter managed to kill 2 of the gangsters with his dagger and throw them out of the van; one of them had his dagger stuck in his heart and that left Walter without a useful weapon. The last gangster, who was now very haggard gave every punch, kick he had against Walter. Now Walter was in pain and really hurt, and the gangster is on top of him and squeezing his arms with his knees. The gangster is about to give Walter a ‘knuckle sandwich’ with his fist, but then Walter grabs the gangster’s gun that was tucked in his belt and shoots him in the eye. The copilot gangster sees that the golden artifacts are being stolen by Walter. Then he goes to the back of the van and tries to catch Walter, but after that, he realizes that he is too late. At last, Walter jumps off leaving a bomb on the van. Distraught, the gangster yells at his partner to get off the van, but then the bomb goes off with a loud bang and the van explodes close to a big wall.

Father and Son

The goal of this project is to identify the 8 plot points (by using quotes) of “Father and Son”, by Bernard MacLaverty. Under each plot point I also have to write 3-4 sentences explaining the quote. The story is about a father and son who reside in Ireland. They are involved in a conflict. The Son is associating himself with dangerous people. The father is trying to find out what’s going on to stop his son from getting hurt.

1) Exposition

Quote: “Wake up, son. I’m away to my work. Where are you going today?” (MacLaverty 165)
Explanation: It introduces the characters and reveals the concern of the father for his son. The setting takes up place in a house on England, the city London, and somewhere around the 1960’s. It is also showing the first quote on the story that is being said by the father.



2) Rising Action

Quote: “My son, he looks confused. I want you to talk to me the way I hear you talk to people at the door… I pulled you away from death once and now you will not talk to me. I want to know if you are in danger again” (MacLaverty 166)
Explanation: The father is worried about his son, and he feels like his son is in grave danger and wants to help him. The father also wants what a true son would to to his father like have a small chat to him, but he is really worried and scared that his son may go into a darker path where it would him and the father in vain.



3) Rising Action:

Quote: “Son you are living on borrowed time. Your hand shook when you got home. I have given you the life you now have.” (MacLaverty 167)
Explanation: This is a rising action. It builds up the plot and conflict by showing the reader that the father wants to help his son and find out what’s going on, but he keeps procrastinating and putting it off for later.



4) Rising Action

Quote: “For two years, I never heard a scrape from you. I read of London in the papers. Watched scenes from London on the news, looking over the reporter’s shoulder at people walking in the street… Then a doctor phoned for me at work… ‘I had to go and collect you. Like a dog’” (MacLaverty 167-168) 
Explanation: This is a rising action because it shows the reader that the Son has been in trouble before, and it’s very likely that he once again could be in serious danger. From this the reader can see that the Son doesn’t care for his father, while the father is very concerned for his son. This builds up the path to the climax.



5) Rising Action:

Quote: “The door swings open and he pushes a hand-gun beneath the pillow… ‘What’s that? Under your pillow?’” (MacLaverty 169) Explanation: Here it is revealed that the Son owns a handgun. This builds up the conflict between the son and father. This also hints to the reader that the Son is most likely involved with dangerous people, and foreshadows what may happen next.



6) Climax:

Quote: “There is a bang. A dish-cloth drops from my hand and I run to the kitchen door” (MacLaverty 169)
Explanation: This is the climax because, the whole story leads up to this moment. The story has been foreshadowing that the son is in danger, and how his father keeps trying to warn him. Here the reader sees that the conflict concludes in the Son getting shot.



7) Falling Action:

Quote: “I take my son’s limp head in my hands and see a hole in his nose that should not be there” (MacLaverty 169)
Explanation: This is the Falling Action. The plot begins to wrap up; it confirms that the Son did get shot and is dying.



8) Denouement

Quote: “My son, let me put my arms around you” (MacLaverty 169) 
Explanation: This is the Denouement, because this happens right after the climax and offers the reader the last pieces of information. It is an expository sad ending. All loose ends are tied up; the reader finds out that the Son does die, which the story has been foreshadowing. The father finally gets to hug his son.

Two Fishermen

Mr. K Smith or “Smitty,” is a character portrayed as a hangman in the short story “Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan. He is a male character in the story who is in his 40’s, and is small/short by height. Smitty is married and has 5 children that are already taller than him, he doesn’t have any education but that doesn’t mean he is stupid and dumb, although he is moderately poor and has a job that he doesn’t like, Smitty’s home is Interior America and he is an American, and his ethnicity is Caucasian. Also ‘He’s   a   nice   little   guy,’ (Morley Callaghan Page 3). The moderately poor man doesn’t have any friends except Michael Foster, he is trying to fit in with the community and trying to make new friends, his beliefs are that he is responsible even though he doesn’t like his job, and feels lonely because the town people don’t like him that much. Smitty has his strengths and weaknesses, his strengths are being loyal to his wife and family, including being responsible, and he is really patient. Smitty can be mostly described as  ‘I   don’t   know.   A  mild,  harmless-‐looking  little  guy.’ (Morley Callaghan Page 1). His weaknesses are being unhappy, and afraid that he might disappoint his wife when he forgot to bring Fish for home, and really afraid that Micheal won’t be his friend. Smitty is very patient around his family and the community, even though they still don’t accept him. His superstitions are dressing like a gentleman for the hanging, so people will respect him, and he says that dawn is the best time to catch fish. At last what Smitty possesses is fishing supplies, and a large fish.

Capital Punishment in “Two Fishermen”

Capital Punishment is an action of a person being killed when they did something extremely wrong/bad and they deserve death. Canada used to have capital punishment but then it was removed from the Canadian Criminal Code in 1976, it was replaced with a mandatory life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years for all first-degree murders. Through the years from 1865-1976 there were deaths for more than 100 people in Canada, but as the years went by the deaths started to decrease until 1976 when Canada decided to become a peacefull country. In the short story I’ve read of “Two Fishermen” was kind of based in Canada.

Thomas was supposed to be killed in the story of “Two Fishermen” but the consequences he had done by his actions weren’t the ones compared to the normal ones the U.S. had, so I don’t think Smitty should have been killed.

1st Reason: Thomas killed Mathew because he was molesting his wife while she was berry picking.

2nd Reason: Thomas was the victim in a struggle before he killed Rhinehart.

3rd Reason: None of these reasons are compared to the ones Canada has.

What is the outside coating of a wire made of? Why is this important?: The outside coating of a wire is made up of  rubber because it’s an insulator that repels electricity, that is why electricity can’t get out of the wire.

Describe in a short paragraph, how your group will design, construct, and assemble the circuit for your robot mask and controller.: Me and my partner(s) will create the robot mask by starting to design the cables that connect the remote control to the mask, the RC will have 5 buttons, 3 buttons for a red light, yellow light, and green light. Then a button for a blue light to show where to go right or left, and a special button to control the switches. All of these lights will be in the robot’s mask to guide the person through the maze.

Marshmallow Tower Questions

1. Was there a leader on your team? Who was it and who decided who the leader would be?

Yes there was a leader in our team, the leader of the team was Evan.


2. If you had no leader, do you think having designated someone a leader would have helped?

Depends on the situation, because someone could say yes and be the leader or someone could choose another person to be the leader.


3. If you had a leader, how did he/she do?

He did very well by brainstorming on how to build the marshmallow tower and finding a pattern.


4. How helpful was everyone on your team in challenging the process of building the tallest structure? Did anyone appear to be an expert?

A lot of us started to make ideas and see if they worked, mostly Evan was the expert of building the tower and putting the marshmallow on the top.


5. Did any team members tune out of the activity — out of frustration with other members or for some other reason? What could you have done to keep all members of the group fully engaged?

All of us worked together as a team, and nobody got frustrated when building it so there was only teamwork and respect. Also I would tell our team about the time that was left for us to finish the tower.


6. Did you feel everyone’s ideas were well received during the activity?

Yes as long as Evan and others agreed to it.


7. How did you feel as the time limit was approaching? Did pressure increase? If yes, was that helpful or not?

The more the time was decreasing the more pressure and intense of our group got, but usually by the last 3-2 minutes we felt like we were done.


8. In retrospect, what could you have done better?

I think we could have done better if we concentrated on the lower body of the tower and not looking at other group’s tower.


9. Did you celebrate small wins? If yes, how did you do this?

No our tower fell apart as a disappointment victory.
