Textiles – Apron

Design Decision: I wanted to keep my apron simple and mature design so that I would still like it and use it years to come. I did not add a pocket to the top of the apron because I found that when I bake or garden I do bend down quite often and whatever I had in my top pocket would fall out, so instead I had three large pockets to the bottom of my apron so that it is still functional.

Creativity: The first feature I put on my apron was the long pocket along the very bottom of the apron. I like how it is very functional but different from just adding a single pocket. The pocket is also double stitched so that is extra secure and I also like the look of the black sewing that stands out. The second feature is the border along the top of the top of the apron. It makes the apron slightly more detailed but still keeping the apron simple which is how I wanted it.

Pattern: I first chose the blue fabric. The blue fabric is called a Houndstooth pattern. I really liked it because it was a very mature and almost vintage looking material. I knew that I would never get sick or outgrow the pattern so that I can use it for years to come. I used two other contrasting colours, black and white. I did not want the second and third colour to take away from the main part of the apron so I used two very simple colours. I also knew that I did not want to use another fabric with a pattern because it would be too busy and clash with the main part.

Wish: I wish that I had made my apron slightly more interesting because although I wanted a simple design, I think it was slightly too simple. I would possibly add lace to the top of my pockets or to the edges of my aprons to create a more interesting look.
