Synthesis of Ideas
My group members and I discussed our individual books that we read in English class and found a common factor that all of our books talk about men overpowering women. In my book, The Lovely Bones, my main character Susie Salmon (14 years old) is taken advantage of by her neighbour George Harvey. Mr. Harvey lures Susie into his underground bunker where he rapes and murders her. My other 2 group members had a similar concept so we created this sculpture of a woman in defeat with a man standing on top of her, symbolizing the men overpowering women. The human condition is that a stereotype is to think that women are weak and fragile compared to men, when that’s not the case.
10 fun things to do over winter break as a teenager in Vancouver: Covid free
I think that the year 2020 has been a mess for everyone. Stores and restaurants are shutting down, there are restrictions on what activities you can do, you can’t travel, and you have to bring a mask where ever you go. What a pain! Can’t this year be over already? At least we have the holidays coming up, where everyone is trying to rush Christmas so that life can feel somewhat normal again.2020 has been a memorable year but for the wrong reasons. I plan on spicing my winter up with some fun ideas that will spread the holiday spirit!
Hello, my name is Makayla Crenshaw, and I’m here to tell you 10 Covid safe activities you can do as a Vancouver teenager in 2020.
10. Sledding
Sledding is an exhilarating way to get outside during the winter. Sledding can be done safely from Covid by socially distancing and not sharing your sled with others. These are only slight restrictions, but that won’t stop you from having a great time as you race down those snowy slopes.
9. Binging Christmas movies
Binging Christmas movies is a tradition for many to get into the holiday spirit. Movies I recommend are Home Alone, Polar Express, and Elf (which was filmed mainly in Vancouver). All these movies are holiday classics filled with suspense and heartwarming moments that you can share with your family.
8. Homemade baking
Every teenager can’t resist food, and baking is a great way to quench your hunger. Baking is the best with a family member. I suggest baking sugar cookies and purchase cookie cutters that will mold your cookies into Christmas shapes, such as Christmas trees, snowmen, Santa, etc.
7. Make Gingerbread houses
Get artistic and design a gingerbread house! You even have the benefit of eating it at the end, which is a tasty sugary treat. Making Gingerbread homes brings back those childhood memories, slathering your house in frosting and candy of all sorts to your heart’s content.
6. Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a way to get out of the house with the benefit of getting exercise. Enjoy the beautiful sights of the snowy mountains, forest scenery, and watch the snowfall from the sky. If you’re an athlete and looking for new ways to stay fit during the winter Covid lockdown, then this is for you!
5. Video Game tournament
Every Christmas, my family likes to bond by having a holiday video game tournament. We select multiplayer games on the Wii so we can all participate. This tradition always brings me excitement and will for your families as well!
4. Online Christmas Shopping
One of my favourite things to do as a teenager. Shopping! Rather than going to a crowded mall filled with people, shopping online is the safest option for the prevention of Covid. Online shopping is a fast way to find all the things on a person’s Christmas list at your disposal.
3. Winter room makeover
To get more into the Christmas spirit, you can decorate your room to make it more festive. This is where your arts and crafts skills start to kick in. You can make are paper snowflakes to hang on your wall, and you can add in a little Christmas tree which will make you feel like you’re in Charlie Brown.
2. Tubing
For tubing, you have the same restrictions as sledding. As long as you’re socially distancing and not sharing your tube then you will be safe from Covid. A spot I recommend to tube is at Mary Hill in PoCo. It’s a steep hill and it’s local so that you don’t have to travel far.
1. Snow sculpture competition
After having large amounts of snowfall, snow sculpting is a fun way to express your creativity in the wintertime. Snow sculpting can be as simple as making a snowman, or if you’re skilled enough, some create actual life-like structures. You could be doing this for hours and never get bored.
Neuron and Synapse Anatomy & Physiology
Neuron Diagram
Neurotransmitter and Synapse
___________________________________________________________________
Functions:
Dendrites- At a start of a neuron, its job is to transfer impulses and messages throughout the neuron. Carries impulses to cell body
Axon – Located at the end of a neuron, carries impulses away from cell body
Cell body- Carries genetic information, maintains structure of neuron and provides energy
Myelin Sheath – fatty material that covers and speeds up electrical impulses in myelin sheath
Nodes of Ranvier- Small spaces in between the myelin sheath, helps create rapid conduction of nerve impulses
Terminal branches of axon–contain synaptic vesicles that store the neurotransmitter for release at the synapse
How do neurons carry messages & communicate with each other?
They communicate by the release of neurotransmitters from the axon into the synapse. This creates action potential and electrical currents
_____________________________________________________________________
Synapse structure & function:
How a signal is sent from axon of sending neuron to dendrite of receiving neuron-
Electrical impulses in the neutrons cause the current to move down the axon to cause a release of neurotransmitters to the synapse. The neurotransmitters bind to Receptors (located on Dendrites), where receptors receive and process messages.
How the receiving neuron “determines” whether or not to send its own action potential-
Dendrites receive electrical currents from the axon, the charge/action potential is determined by how the neutron will be fired. When a neutron is fired across a synapse, then action potential will be created.

Glia structure & function:
What does Schwann cells do & where found?
Schwann cells are found in in the Myelin Sheath. They’re job is to keep peripheral nerve fibres alive.
- What does Astrocytes do & where found?
They are found in the brain and spinal cord. Astrocytes are meant to regulate electrical impulses within the brain.
What does ependymal cells do & where found?
Ependymal cells is for the maintenance of homeostasis in the brain and retinal extracellular milieu and for the formation of the blood–cerebrospinal fluid barrier or the blood–retina barrier. They are found in the brain and CNS (Central Nervous System).
