Poem Analysis

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

The poem is about a guy passing through a forest on a very dark and cold night. He wants to stop and sleep but he has “miles to go before [he] sleep[s].” The narrator is first person, the man speaking to himself. Setting is late night during winter on the “darkest evening of the year.”. The words are concrete with no clichés. Rhyme, rhythm, and repetition adds emphasis and interest and flow in the poem. The rhyme scheme is aaba bbcb ccdc dddd. This is a closed poem constructed of four stanzas with four lines each.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Picture #1: the dark woods with no house because of the line “his house is in the village though”

Picture #3: a man on a horse in the dark woods

Picture #5: “he” [the horse] shakes bells so I chose a picture with a horse and bells on it. Also why there is bell sound effect in the presentation.

Picture #7: I googled “lovely dark and deep forest” and that came up

Flame Lab

For this lab, we sprayed different chemical compounds onto a flame to see what colours would show up. The colour  varies colour depending on which element is present due to unpaired electrons in different energy levels.

Capital Punishment

The Five Different Ways of Executing

Capital punishment is a way the government in many countries punishes people who commit severe crimes. Canada used to execute people in this way but no longer does. The history of corporate punishment in Canada started around 1749 when a man was arrested and sentenced to death for stabbing someone to death. A lot of documents of executions were lost in natural disasters. After confederation the spectrum of crimes leading to confederation narrowed to murder, rape and treason. In 1868 parliament decided it is best that people be executed privately instead of in public where everyone can watch. In 1950 attempts to end capital punishment started. In 1961 the crimes leading to execution narrowed even more; only the capital murder, meaning a planned murder during a violent crime or of a police officer, would lead to execution. In 1967 there was a 5 year hold on executions by the government and in 1973 they decided to permanently remove capital punishment from the country. Now, Canada is free of capital punishment and people who commit crimes are sent to jail for rehabilitation.

If the short story “Two Fishermen” was located in Canada, with my knowledge of capital punishments history, the year would be someone from 1749-1867. One of the first executions happened in 1749 and the last public one was 1867. Since Thomas Delaney was publicly hung, (insert quote) those years must be the range of time this story occurred.

In the short story “Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan, Thomas Delaney is sentenced to death. In my opinion Thomas does not deserve to be killed because all he is doing is defending his wife and himself. Mathew Rhinehart “molest[ed] [Delaney’s] wife” (p.1). Of course Thomas is angry when he sees that and has to help his wife when “there [is] a struggle… before he kills Rhinehart” (p.1). His crime is purely defence and instead of being hung he should be named a hero for helping his wife.

The Freshly Made Tasty Fast Food

Yelp: Wendy’s Will Satisfy Your Hunger in a Delicious Way
Kerfers

Wendy’s restaurant meets all my expectations with service, quality, taste, reasonable price and more. If you enjoy casually eating out, Wendy’s is right for you. The service is great, the employees will listen to your order and make sure you get what you asked for, not to mention they’re extremely polite. If ever there is a problem, the workers will fix it for you to the best of their ability. Since it’s fast food, you will receive your food quickly and there’s no thirty minute wait how it would be at other restaurants. Also the food is very delicious. If you like salads, the power Mediterranean salad will take you to heaven. My personal favourite item on the menu is the homestyle asiago ranch chicken club because the combination of asiago cheese on a toasted bun topped with bacon and veggies is like a symphony in your mouth. The food is always served hot and fresh. There are also vegetarian options such as baked potatoes and salads without chicken etc. Moreover the atmosphere is calm and not intimidating making you feel like you have to act a certain way. You can come with your friends and be yourself without judgement. Next, the appearance of the dining room is nice, it’s not overly fancy but the booths are comfortable to sit in. Lastly, the price is very good I’d say. You pay for what you get. If you get a combo, the regular is small which is about the equivalent to a McDonald’s medium. If you’re really thirsty and hungry you can upsize to a medium or large which always gets commented that is very huge. But the additional price is very reasonable. If you’re looking for a little snack and have little money, there’s the value menu which has items that are either $1.89 or $2.19, which is very affordable. In conclusion, Wendy’s is my favourite restaurant because all my wants and needs are met at a good price. Continue reading
