What’s in My Junk Food?

Personally, my favImage result for strawberry cheesecake blizzard adorite junk food would be a strawberry cheesecake blizzard from Dairy Queen. Since I work there I was able to try many flavors because access to them were so easy. Strawberries has always been my favorite fruit and for some reason it really mixes well with the cheesecake pieces and vanilla ice cream. The nutrition facts for a small strawberry cheesecake blizzard is 500 calories, 75g of sugar, 21g of fat, 340mg of sodium, 74g of carbohydrates and 14g of protein. As you can see, there is very minimal nutrients in this and the nutrients is does have leads straight to fat. This blizzard isn’t the healthiest and shouldn’t be your first snack choice as it is mainly sugars and fats, meaning it won’t give you long lasting energy like fruits and veggies and it doesn’t have any health benefits for your body. This is a nice treat to have every once in awhile, but can be a serious threat to your health and fitness if you eat this consistently.

Stretch the Kitchen

My group decided to make peanut butter cookies and added chocolate chips to the recipe and substituted white flour for whole wheat flower. Overall, this lab went well, although there were some things we could of changed to make it even better. In my opinion, we should of cut the recipe in half as it was very difficult to mix and resulted in us hand mixing and making larger cookies than we desired. Another thing I would of changed is the amount of chocolate chips, we added 1 cup when all we really needed was a 1/2 or 1/4 cup. We made decisions based on everyone’s own wants in our group, no one was left out and everyone was able to give their opinion, I believe that is what helped things move so smoothly.

March/April Lab Reflection

I chose to do my reflection on the Chicken Yakisoba lab because it took most of the block for us to complete and it involved us having to cook chicken, which helped all four of us learn how to properly cook chicken for future purposes. I enjoyed the lab because there was something for all of us to do, whether it was actually making the dish or cleaning up the unit, no one was standing around watching the others. The final product did turned out how I expected, although the noodles were a little overcooked, but it didn’t ruin the taste. What helped was the fact that everyone was helping. My group worked well together because we all understood how to do the lab and we all knew what we had to do in order to complete it. If I was to do this lab again, I would wait a bit before cooking the noodles so that everything was finished at the same time.

Salad Rolls – Assignment

1. Did you enjoy this lab? Why or why not?

I enjoyed this lab because it helped me practice using the claw while cutting the vegetables and it also allowed me to see the process of making and rolling the salad rolls like they do in restaurants.

2. What reasonable thing would you do to alter this recipe to keep it healthy or make it healthier? What nutritional value would this add to the recipe?

If i was to add something to this recipe to keep it healthy, I would add broccoli because it has a similar taste to the cucumber and carrots so it would blend in well, as well as it has many nutritional values and is rich in antioxidants. Broccoli would add an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

3.  What exactly does deep frying do to our food? Why does it become unhealthy? What, if any, nutrients are added that are not great for us?

When food is placed in the hot oil, rapid surface heating takes place. This leads to a quick change in the form of the surface proteins, which in turn allows only a limited flow of water from the product being deep fried. It then becomes unhealthy due to the fats in the oil that it is being fried in. Calories, saturated fats and trans fats are added when you deep fry food.

Plenty Questions

  1. I would describe the speaker’s mood as mocking when he continues to describe his life around him and the repeated use of the word beautiful to describe everything.
  2. Leaves in the gutter and salt stains on shoes is more interesting than flowers as an example of beauty as it goes more in depth with the life around the poet, it also gives you a closer look to what the poet is trying to imply.
  3. The effect of the poet’s use of similes is to elaborate what he says and the description of how the raindrops look and to exaggerate the appearance of the raindrops to make it sound more dramatic. This technique adds to the overall feeling of the poem because the similes can be considered cheesy and the feeling given in this poem is that the people around him can come across as fake.
  4. In the poem, what actually happens is there’s a storm and he begins to explain the beauty within it and within his community. What I know about the speaker’s life based on this poem is that he is mimicking society around him, and how that everyone considers everything to be beautiful, giving a sense of falseness, when in reality there are things in life that aren’t always considered beautiful.

The Metaphor

Life is a ticking clock. As each second progresses you and the world around you flourishes. With each hour your life goes on with no solution to changing what has passed. Although there will come a time that, that clock will break and your life will end. Life is a ticking clock and eventually that ticking will stop.

February Lab Reflection

I chose to do my reflection on the breakfast cookies lab because I feel it’s a good treat to have, especially since it’s a cookie made with many nutritional and healthy ingredients. I personally enjoyed the lab because during the whole period, everyone in my group was doing something. Whether it was cleaning or helping with making the cookies, no one was standing around. The cookies turned out exactly how they were suppose to which enabled me to have a positive opinion on them, they weren’t too big, too small, under-cooked or overcooked. My group and I did an excellent job with the production of the cookies. What helped us, is making sure we did the correct steps and did the same things we saw in the demo and we also kept a close eye on the cookies when they were in the oven to make sure they didn’t burn. My group and I worked really well together, we all were willing to help and knew what had to be done and did it as soon as we could. Also, when one of us had a question, the rest were willing to answer! If I was to do this lab again at school, I wouldn’t change anything because of how it turned out the first time, but, if I was to do this again at home I would try adding in different nuts or dried fruit instead of sunflower seeds and raisins, just to see how they would taste with different ingredients added to them.
