Hearts Afire – Mini Inquiry Poem

Image result for art about love

Hearts Afire

Some pursue it the way the waves relentlessly kiss the shores,

Through low tides and high tides,

Eloquently pleased more then ever before.

A small taste of life’s greatest desire,

Their hearts afire.

Some wish to woo instead of being wooed,

A one-sided devotion,

The other being eschewed.

There was no such pleasure,

A lie of life’s desire?

Life’s grandest craving conveyed into eternal words of expression,

Heartfelt articles,

An undying affection.

Desire creeping into our brains,

Capturing our hearts in vain.

Some will have their heart break as they sing a love song,

An impenetrable soul of philophobia,

How does one push down a feeling so strong?

Are we to pursue our desire?

Should we let our concrete pillars crumble?

Risk our fragile emotions?

All to feel our heart afire?

Rationale:

Hearts Afire is a poem written by Madelaine Wong which explores the theme of love and change in our lives. Wong portrays it as a soul contemplating on chasing affection or not to, bringing up how sometimes it is hard to face feelings, fearing we may face rejection or have our heart broken in the blink of an eye. Her poem captures just how beautiful love could be, t0 be wooed with songs, gifts, the affection preserved in eternity through poetry just as William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 had mentioned; So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Wong also put how sometimes love can be a one sided affection, relationship or end up hurting this one person causing them to put up concrete pillars of protection. She managed to incorporate the idea of some wishing to go after someone instead of waiting to be pursued themselves in the line Some wish to woo instead of being wooed, a line inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They want to change the way society thinks, pursue their own destiny in their own way. Overall it is a poem that encompasses the hardships and amazing things love can offer. It is hard to challenge society’s narrow minded thinking but Wong is able to give life to the matter in using love as a real life example of challenging society’s views and expectations. Love is blind, it doesn’t care for race, gender nor language and that is the way we should view it. We should not be afraid to love or to be loved. There are times when it is okay to let our defenses fall, to welcome in a new affection with open arms and try from a new beginning.

3 Paragraph Article Analysis Post

CBC Article http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/fake-facebook-accounts-calgary-alberta-politics-1.4128312

Our lives our filled with social media nowadays, it’s been ingrained into our everyday lives. Along with the increase of the use of social media comes a time where advertisement is a large industry as is cyberbullying, fake news and luring. In this article it tells about the Alberta politics and the fake account fiasco. It is someone with strong opinions and thought surrounding the politics but instead of using their identity, they use stock images off the internet. Many people use social media negatively, luring children, cyberbullying, so does using a fake identity count? Unless they fully use someone else’s identity, I don’t consider this a major issue. With all these ‘fake people’ we need to be on the lookout for them, do not trust too easily, if you don’t really know this person then do not accept their friend or follow request, don’t add them back. If they are trying to talk to you and they seem to have suspicious intentions, do be caution and block them if necessary. We may think we know someone by simply their username or their name on their profile but it’s always good to stay alert and be cautious.

Throughout social media you are bound to come across fake news more then once. Postings about fake people going missing, fake events occurring, fake deaths and more. Then again not every post is fake but there are many that are false. A lot of these faux posts up after a large disaster such as a terrorist attack, this article used the Manchester Ariana Grande Bombing, the real reason behind these fake posts remains unknown. These online trolls use photos from online, sometimes specifically targeting people such as YouTube personalities, journalists and more. The trolls would often describe their missing person as a close relative, a sibling, parent or child. The best way to get rid of these trolls is to not repost as it could cause the real people with missing loved ones even more distraught. We soak up all the things we read on our feed so sometimes we need to just stop and ask ourselves to asses it. As a consumer we need to carefully look at what we are given and don’t necessarily have to believe everything on social media or even the news.

BBC Article http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170301-lies-propaganda-and-fake-news-a-grand-challenge-of-our-age

The media is a great platform to share news, information and pictures, but not everything we come across is true. We hear fake news of celebrities dying, fake information on political matters and many of us buy it. Our information is getting messed up and confuse, news about the present and in the past has become hazy, do we really know the real stories anymore? This explosion of fake information spreads around and once we come across these posts we often think it is true, we don’t stop to question what it says. Even though people may have been exposed to the truth, a study has shown that people are still more likely to believe the false story over the truth. When we search something up on google, Bing, etc. we are shown ‘top websites’, they are websites that paid google to put their site up first from the search results. Does anyone even go on to the second page of search results? Do we check for reliability and validity in our sources? We need to have a skillset in place, so we can check websites, check their sources properly and find the correct information. If we don’t take action now, important information could be loss and be mixed up forever. A rising generation could be learning the wrong facts about history and the present.

The Help – Individual Novel Projects – Gallery Walk

The Help by Kathryn Stockett, was my novel for English. Below is the gallery walk we created for the novel. Each of the four objects is symbolic along the thematic lines of the novel and in certain ways the human condition. The reference to each of the pictures is at the bottom of each ‘piece of art’. Underneath the gallery walk, I also included the compositions in a word document as it is tricky to read on the gallery.

The Constant Unconcious Gender Biases

Has the gap between genders finally been closed yet? Even though in most Western countries we tend to believe so, the answer is actually quite debatable. The legal rights between both genders are still equal, yet women are getting paid only 77% of the amount a man would get for the exact same job. I strongly believe that our world should have equality throughout as many fields as possible. Certain things such as government powers should have a little difference in power and equality however, things such as pay should be equal. We should be equal throughout treatment for people of other gender, culture and religions. Though we have come very far from the past, there are still rivers we need to build bridges over. Ever since we were young we were taught some gender biases, even though many we are not aware about. In gym class we are separated by the weight of a shot put, for a girl this is your distance to jog, a boy at least 50m longer. Boys aren’t supposed to play dress up, male superheroes are better, stronger, men are smarter, etc. Where is equity when we need it? We should be holding everyone to a certain equal standard of performance based on skill instead of judging someone based off of their genders. Many believe otherwise.

In a study, researchers tried experimenting with young children. These children at around the age of 6 were asked if a “extremely smart” protagonist of various stories were males or females. By this young age, these children either in grade one or in kindergarten, were more likely to guess that the protagonist were male over female. It wasn’t just the little boys to guest so, girls were quite likely to guess the protagonist was male as well. That unconscious gender bias spreads throughout ur life time, our careers a great place for the biases to show. Participants of a experiment were asked to watch a video of entrepreneur pitching a new idea. The results were astonishing to see, but not entirely unanticipated. The participants were more permissive towards the groups who presented their pitches with a male narrator, 68% willing to help fund the group. However, when there was a female narrator, only 32% thought the pitch would be more worthy. The catch of the experiment was that the pitches were practically identical, the only difference being the gender of the narrator. Another study showed participants supposed applicants of people to deem who’d be more fit for a manager position in a laboratory. Much of the applications were alike, the names being the only difference. Applications with a primarily male used name were more likely chosen versus that with a more feminine name. The gender gap is learnt since young, even though we think we are not passing down/teaching these traits, the slight differences are picked up by young children.

There are many in this world who believe that since our creator has made men and women so different, that there should be differences to separate our genders. They think we are different because we need to. There are certain jobs that require either a more masculine or feminine touch. Jobs such as firefighting or heavy machinery assembly require those of a fitter and stronger physique. Others jobs such as modelling and early childhood learning depends on more of a female touch. Fashion for women seems to be more innovative and advanced, learning at an early age sometimes is easier in an environment with more gentle personas. Now just because these jobs have a more strict gender stereotypes, that does not mean people of the other gender can’t take part in that same career field.

We need equity, a more intelligent solution to our inequalities. Equality won’t come in the same shape and form in ever subject, and gender equality is something just so broad it’ll be hard to achieve. I think that the solution is treating everyone with equity. We must accept our differences and still treat everyone with the expectations of completing the same tasks. Equity may be our nearest solution to gender equality. Before we achieve any of that, we must ask ourselves, what do we expect gender equality to look like? “Gender equality is the unfinished business of the 21st century.” – Unknown
