Fictional Safety Story

Hi my name is Maddex and I had one of the worst science classes of my life today. It was supposed to be fun because we were supposed to be doing a candle lab but then the worst thing imaginable happened. We started by having an ethical discussion about whether it is right to kill animals for science. I personally think it is ok as long as the animal is being put to good use. After the discussion we put on our goggles for our lab to protect our eyes and we lit our candle and put it on a petri dish to prevent the wax from going on the table. We then grabbed four different sized beakers (250ml, 400ml, 600ml and 1000ml) which are normally used to mix liquids but we used to cover the candle to see if it affects the candle burn time.

The experiment went as I thought and we cleaned it up but our teacher Mr. Smith thought it would be a fun idea to do a second experiment. This second experiment used sodium ferrocyanide which had a harmful/fatal symbol and a corrosive symbol which made me a little worried but I didn’t pay too much attention to it. We put the sodium cyanide in a graduated cylinder to measure the liquid and then we put it in a 400ml beaker. After that we used a funnel (which is used to add liquids without spilling them) to add iron ions to the beaker and it created a dark blue colored sludge that we had to put through a filter and get Prussian blue dye. Most people did with no problem except Johnny and Tommy’s group because they had been horsing around and accidentally knocked over an empty beaker while they fell.

A piece of glass punctured Johnny’s skin and he got something in his eye, as he started to weep, Tommy went to notify the teacher. Rebecca went and got the broom and dust pan and swept up the glass. She put the glass in the broken glass bin instead of the garbage and Steve went and got the portable eye wash bottle to clear Johnny’s eyes. While this had gone on, Mr. Smith called an ambulance to take Johnny to the hospital to get stitched up.

Mr. Smith sat the class down and talked to the class about not horsing around in the lab and we reviewed lab safety that we had learned earlier in the year so that we can prevent something like this happening again.

Corrosive Symbol- causes irritation to living tissue

harmful/fatal- can cause death if ingested

  1. I like your creativity with making two separate story’s. I think you missed giving more of a definition with the science equipment that you mentioned in your story.I wish you gave more of a definition with your symbols. But other then a couple of things that you missed great work on your story Maddex!

  2. Very good work on your fictional safety story. You fully communicated your understanding of safety issues in the Science class and included many pieces of scientific equipment. You have a good understanding of the safety symbols and mentioned a Science ethical dilemma. I like how you included parts of a real experiment we did in class.
