Semester 2 Reflection

1. What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this year? (Use videos, pictures, upload materials etc. as evidence of learning)

Some of the things that I learnt this semester about technology were the MircoBits and the Cricut. I have worked with things similar in the past but never with Micro bits. It was a learning experience when going about the physical part of the Micro bits and less of a new thing with the block coding. It was cool to connect the wires and make the MicroBits do certain things. Didi, Maya and I all got to learn how to use the Cricut and figure out how to use it. We made a Little Prince deco and printed it out. Something that I learned in Tech Team that was not technology-related was building my problem-solving skill from working in the wave or playing with the MicroBits/Cricut. With the use of technology, it is important to have these problem-solving skills for the future. I also accomplished using the Divi Builder with my blog at the beginning of the year. My group in physics tried to use MircoBits in our project, shown below.

2. What aspects of your work are successful? Explain why.

The bases that we were able to learn at the beginning of Tech Team, made other projects that I worked on easier. For example in Co-Op, there were a lot of times where we used technology. One example of this was when we tried to attach a MicroBit to our thermos project. Our experience in Tech Team, help out a lot in trying to fix the problems. As well as during my work experience for science Co-op, I had a lot of technology involved but because of Tech Team, I had experience with some of these things already. During my work experience, I worked with code and fixing problems. These experiences and knowing how to problem solve was very useful. This would have been very difficult if I didn’t already have experience coding in Tech Team.

3. What aspects of your work are challenging? Explain why.

An aspect of high school, in general, is that we are now expected to know how to use a lot of the technologies that we have at schools like using our blogs or things in the marker space like the 3D printers or the green screen. Before Tech Team, there wasn’t the chance to learn about how to learn these things. I also think that lot of the students including me have don’t know to use these things. Tech Team was a great tool to teach me and others a bunch of skills in technology and I am very thankful for Tech Team.  Now I am able to teach others about these tools. I don’t know how to use all of these tools in the marker space such as the 3D printer, I hope that in grade 12, I will be able to continue to learn new skills. That I can use for other projects and incorporate in school work.

4. What steps did you take to overcome these challenges / what adjustments did you need to make?

Some of the steps that I took to help overcome these challenges were perseverance and patience. When I was having trouble fixing a problem, I would try to be patient and not give up. For example with the MicroBit assignment, when we had trouble fixing a problem, it was important to not give up. Some of the adjustments that I made, was coming back to a problem with a clear mind and trying again. Some other steps were by learning extra information on topics that I didn’t understand at first or wanted to know more about.

5. Is there anything you can do to improve? (with your approach to the project, or altering the project)

The biggest thing that I can do to improve is practice. There are so many new technologies at school and the best thing I can do is to practice using them. As well as asking for help or assistance for certain things. I could get someone else in Tech Team who knows how to use something that I don’t to teach me how to use it and I can do the same for them. In the next year, I would like to take new opportunities and learn other things with Tech Team.

6. As Riverside continues to immerse itself into innovation and technology, what do you think Riverside can do to provide support and help for teachers and students? (Provide specific examples)

In the past years at Riverside, I think that the Wave was a lot more accessible. The wave being able to have its own room with a sign was able to make it easier for students to find. It was more inviting than having it hidden in the library. There have been a lot fewer students come to the Wave for help this year than when I was in grade 9 or 10.  Also to have the ability to have more resources like the wave to help students online would be very useful. Similar to the videos that Mehrshad and Moe made for the grade 9s at the start of the year, I think we should make more “Welcome to Riverside” videos and more tech support videos. Tech Team should also have an Instagram page that would be very useful. We could help students by direct message and/or post tutorials on how to do different things on your blog or how to use My Ed. I believe it is important that all teachers know basic skills such as how to connect devices to WiFi, how to synch One Drive to your device, and especially MyEd so we can have consistent marking. One way we could do this is by having resources made by Tech Team to give to the teachers at the start of the year.

7. Do you have any feedback or suggestions, as we move forward, that could help the Tech Team meet the needs of our school and staff / be more effective? (Provide specific examples)

Tech Team has a very big impact in our school that I’ve seen from grade and 10 beings on the outside as well as this year being in Tech Team. I think that Tech Team does a very good job already at helping the students and staff at our school. A couple of suggestions would to advertise the Wave and make it more inviting to students. Another suggestion I would make is to teach the students and staff at our school more about not only what devices we have at our school but what they can be used for and how to use them. For example, like the 3D printers at our school as I knew about them since I started in grade 9 but this never seemed useful to me. But looking back it would have been cool to use for a lot of projects that I did in school. Before this, I used to think that the 3D printers were just for students in specific electives but after this, I found out that they can be used for any class. As we move forward, I believe that it would be best for the Tech Team to make the Maker’s Space more well-known. If I had not joined the Tech Team, I would have not discovered the Maker’s Space.
