New Book Cover – “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time”

The cover of Mark Haddon’s best seller “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time” relates very well to the plot and storyline of the book. When looking at the cover my first thought was about the dog. My first thought was “Obviously the dog is Wellington” (Wellington being the dog who was murdered in the book), but my second thought was “Why is it upside down?”. When I first picked up the book I was confused on which way was up. Knowing this why did Mark Haddon design it as such. My theory is that the dog on the cover isn’t Wellington but is actually Christopher (the protagonist of the story). I think this because Christopher thinks of dogs as equals to humans or maybe even more than humans so obviously in his mind he could easily compare himself to a dog. The dog is also upside down giving it a different outlook on the world like Christopher looks at the world constantly. Christopher doesn’t think like a “normal” person would, instead he sees it in a “very different way” or he sees the world “upside down”. Another thing I realized is that the book’s main colour is red which Christopher says is his favourite colour because it reminds him of super good day.

The picture just above this paragraph is the cover I have designed for Mark Haddon’s best seller “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time”. I really wanted to keep the aspects of the cover that I really loved about it while adding a few extra details of my own. Details that I really enjoyed about the book when I read it. To start I decided it was best that I kept the upside down dog. I decided to keep it because I think that it was a really beautiful use of symbolism and it would be an awful mistake to throw it away. I also kept the red background because it’s Christopher’s favourite colour. What I added was the camera and the film. I added these because in the book he mentions he sees life like it’s a film he could rewind. Then I put the upside down dogs onto the film to add to the concept that he sees the world and records it differently than a “normal” person. This detail really stood out to me because it adds a lot to Christopher’s character. I also added shapes in the background for no other reason than being aesthetically pleasing.😁

    Lucy,

Thank you for posting your “New Book Cover,” digital project for COL and English 9. The following are my observations/feedback for you regarding the assignment on a technological and posting perspective:

    – All elements are properly posted on your Edublog.
    – Paragraphs explain in detail the aesthetic and stylistic choices in the original cover, as well as what you did in creating the new cover
    – The new cover is animated and is creatively designed, loved the camera roll and the reasoning behind it.
    – I think you could have explained the symbolism behind the upside down dog

Overall, I thought you did an excellent job on this assignment!
