In our modern-day world, food is heavily packaged and processed, you may not notice it, but almost all the food we have, is in some way packaged in plastic. Whether that’s steak covered in plastic on a styrofoam plate, microwavable pizza pops, and junk food, they are all covered in plastic. Because there are so many different things to be packaged, there are also lots of different kinds of packaging, for example, cardboard, styrofoam, plastic wrap, and many others. Even though packaging may have some downsides, it also has many upsides as well, for example, its easy to see through, light, and easy to produce. But even though there are positives, as I mentioned before there are many negatives as well which I believe to outweigh the positives. One of the negatives that comes from using these packaging’s after the packaging has been used, they are usually not disposed of properly, and because most of the packaging is made out of plastic, it normally ends up in the ocean, or in land fills where it is never disposed of. In fact, only 9% of all plastic ever made has been made has been recycled, and the other 91% is still on the earth. Other than just packaging, there is also a lot of actual food wasted every single day, for example, in Canada, every year 2.2 million tons of food is wasted. And in America, 103 million tons of food is wasted every year. Furthermore, there are many other ways that we can reduce food waste and packaging waste, for one, instead of plastic utensils we can use more eco friendly materials like bamboo or wood. Another way we can reduce our waste is we can give our unused food to places like food banks and shelters. We can also recycle the plastic we use and/or instead of using 1 time use plastic, we can use reusable plastic containers. There are so many other ways we can decrease the amount of waste we produce, but we’re not going to change overnight, so we need to start by taking small steps to preserving our world for the future generations.
