Inquiry Term-Long Project

What would you like to investigate/make as a long term project?

For my inquiry project, I am painting. My idea is to spread awareness about something important but not often spoke about.

What do you need to get started?

I want to make this because I feel like it isn’t fair for us to stay quiet about certain situations and speak a lot about others. Nothing is less important than the other. I want to be able to spread awareness and hopefully be able to help even just by a painting. I think quite a lot of people have done something about spreading awareness in their projects, but I want to find something that is being ignored or not a lot of people have spoken up about.

How will you begin the project?

Some challenges I may face is actually painting, I don’t think I’m the best at it but I’m certain that I will do my best and try techniques that I may find online or through Mx. Vittie.

Life Below Water Project:

For my Life Below Water project, I chose to work on a Leatherback Sea Turtle.

When I first started on this project I was going to do a seal, but later on changed it to the leatherback sea turtle. The first day of making this model, I was struggling with how I’m supposed to form and make the body of the turtle, since it’s a big turtle. I asked Mx. Vittie and she helped me make the body for the turtle and guided me throughout the whole project.

This is the turtle after adding the legs and head to it, I’d say putting the legs on was challenging because it was heavy and I was scared that it would fall off when it dried.

The next day after, I added a little more details to it. I added the turtle’s ridges and two holes on the side of the shell to be able to hang it up.

After adding the final details, I put it on the slow dry rack and this is what it looks like today. (March 27, 2023)

After taking it out the slow dry rack, I started working on painting the turtle. It wasn’t as challenging as I thought it would be the colours were easy to mix and I put a few details on it like the lighter green that spreads across the turtle.

Vessels Process:

I first started making a squid vessel. The decision process of making this and how I was going to make it took some time. It was the first ever vessel I had worked on and it was quite a challenge to figure out how I was going to make it.

A few weeks before spring break I finished making this vessel, but the next day I came back it broke apart and I tried to fix it and put it back together but I realized that it became really moist because I sprayed too much water the previous day. After thinking about it I decided to not continue making it originally how I wanted to because it just wasn’t working out and it kept breaking apart.

Interpersonal and Family Relationships 11 Core Competency Reflection

My Artifact: LISTENING.pptx (sharepoint.com)

My Core Competency Reflection:

For this class, I chose our Communication unit. During the unit we spent time talking about effective communication and practicing it too. Listening thoughtfully is one of the keys to effective communication. During these discussions, I practiced making eye contact, facing the person talking and reading body languages. I also ask questions if I do not understand something and make sure the person, I am talking to understands what I am saying, another way to make sure that I understand is repeating what the other person has said to me. If me and the person I am talking to disagrees with something I say or I disagree with something they say I make sure they know it and why I disagree with them, after then we both find tell each other what we could do to make it work and agree on something we both think is right to do. I learned to do this while in this class. My communication skills has been better and improved while taking this course.

Genetic Engineering

Genetic Engineering: Cutting and Reassembling DNA

What is it?

Genetic Engineering also known as “Genetic Manipulation” is the direct manipulation of an organisms genes to achieve the organisms desirable traits. The process of Genetic Engineering is using recombinant DNA technology to modify the genes of an organism.

What’s the greatest advancement of Genetic Engineering?

Genetic Engineering’s has a lot of benefits to it. Benefits that would help the planet be better in a lot of ways. It could help with the spread of diseases by breeding sterile insects, it could also help improve crop yields and crop quality that would help many developing countries and could reduce world hunger. Genetic Engineering could benefit us in many ways, so I would say Genetic Engineering’s best advancement is helping reduce the world problems.

How is Genetic Engineering used?

Genetic Engineering is used for many ways to improve plants, animals, food, etc. It is used to make food more nutritious and tastier. For animals and plants to grow faster and improve. Medicine for less diseases to spread.

One example is bananas. Bananas are the main source or calories in many countries. Uganda’s production of bananas have been affected by the emergence of new diseases. So, scientists have used Genetic Engineering to prevent the fruit from getting disease by inserting a pepper gene into it.

How is Genetic Engineering changing the world as we continue to advance towards the future?

Genetic Engineering can change and help the world to be better and improve. As I said before, Genetic Engineering can help developing countries improve crops, it could breed sterile insects that will reduce the spread of diseases. With Genetic Engineering many developing countries will improve, which means less world problems and less deaths.

Community Connections

I interviewed Jessica Luxe. She does fashion/designing for a living.

I chose to interview her because she is one of the most popular fashion designers in Vancouver, and fashion is a big part of my life like it is to her.

She showed me how being happy about what you do is really important, and not being afraid of taking risks and mistakes. She is a big inspiration for me especially when it comes to fashion. Me, myself also  has a big interest and passion for fashion. Unlike her, I’ve always been into fashion even as a kid she started getting interested into fashion after high school in Squamish which she says became a form of self-expression when she moved to North Vancouver for university.

Her answers to the questions:

Why are you passionate about your job?

It makes me happy, which is such a millennial answer but if you aren’t looking out for your own happiness, who will?

What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

I started back in 2012 and there weren’t many resources when it came to learning how to pitch brands, negotiate a contract, managing time between school and work, advocating for yourself in a business setting, determining a pricing structure, learning to edit, handling rejection and so much more. Each learning curve was an obstacle to get over.

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

Not to be afraid to make mistakes and be rejected. The faster you fall, the faster you can get up and try again.

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

I can be reached at jessica@jessicaluxe.com or follow me on TikTok and IG: jessicaluxe!

What do you enjoy/love most about your job?

At this point, it’s been fun connecting with my community and passing on my learnings from over the years.

Did you always know that you had a passion for fashion before you started?

Not at all, it became a form of self expression after I graduated high school in Squamish And moved to North Vancouver for university.

The grammar rule that our group is doing is the types of sentences, such as interrogative, declarative, imperative and exclamatory. This rule has four definitions for each of the types of sentences. The definition of the interrogative sentences is that they are used to ask a direct question towards someone about a certain topic. Declarative sentences mean that this sentence is used to display information about something, such as an assignment or a test. The definition for imperative sentences is that they’re used to tell someone what to do, so basically a command for someone. Last but not least, the exclamatory sentences are sentences that are used when you want to express a lot of emotion towards something or about something. Next, I will be giving examples for each of the types of sentences. Examples of interrogative sentences are: “How often do you read this article?”, “What is an adverb?”, and “What time will you finish writing your English homework?”. These examples show that they are asking direct questions to someone about different topics. The examples for declarative sentences are: “We own a cat.”, “This is my favorite movie.”, and also “Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago.” These examples are facts and information about certain topics. Examples for the imperative sentences are: “Do not stop.”, “Never speak to me like that again.”, and “Please leave your shoes outside.” These examples are showing that they are a command for someone to do something. At last, we have the examples for the exclamatory sentences: “I got an A in my research paper!”, “That movie was scary!”, and also “I can’t believe how fast that car was going!” All of these examples end in exclamation marks, which therefore means that they’re expressing a lot of emotion when they’re said.

Test Questions:

  1. What is a declarative sentence?
  2. What is an example of an exclamatory sentence?
  3. When would you use an imperative sentence?
  4. In which situation would you use an interrogative sentence? Situations: when you’re asking your friend if they did something this weekend or when you’re explaining an assignment to someone

Answers:

  1. A declarative sentence is a sentence that is used to display information about something.
  2. An example of an exclamatory sentence is “That movie was so scary!”
  3. You would use it when you would want to tell someone to do something for you.
  4. You would use it when you’re asking your friend about what they did this weekend.

Stop Motion- “The Friday Everything Changed”

The film below is a stop motion video, with Lego using the story “The Friday Everything Changed”. I contributed to this project by sharing my ideas while creating the storyboard before filming, while filming I also assisted with moving the Lego, while one group member takes the photos. In this project I also helped with the editing of the stop motion video.
