In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, the values, rules, and morals are tested of a society by ‘divergents’ who are unable to commit to one faction. At the age of 16, the young adults are forced to choose a lifelong faction to be a part of: “Faction before blood.” However, Beatrice Prior was unable to only choose one faction, she was divergent. Unable to choose forced her to try and fit in until, the faction system started hunting divergents. Everyone was at risk and it took the brutal force of Dauntless under a simulation to be able to overthrow the governing faction, Abnegation – with the commands from Erudite. The story ended with Tris (Beatrice) and her boyfriend, Four fleeing with the family they had left so they could be able to fight back another day against the system of factions and conformity. Humans want to be able to perfect society and be able to control those who try and test or break societal rules, which in the end creates a create conflict of human instinct to survive and fight back. We can see how humans have a natural instinct to fight back when being controlled. Humans try and aim for a greater good – which is in their own perspective because everyone is unique with their ideas, opinions, and beliefs.
