Character
At the beginning of the novel. Cole is the main character in this novel. He is a fifteen-year old convicted juvenile delinquent from Minneapolis. He was angry, afraid of face himself and always wants to protect himself. Cole viciously beat a classmate of his named Peter Driscal onto the floor of his school sidewalk. Because of Cole’s anger, Peter had got head trauma, speech problems, and constant nightmares. The others character are Edwin and Garvey. They are instructing Cole on the terms of his banishment to the island. Cole learned a lot from this two people. When he come to the island, he feel alone and nobody love him. He saw the spirit bear and fought with it. He was disastrous defeat. After that, he started to change, he started take his responsibilities and help other people. He was not angry anymore.
Theme
Finish reading the “Touching Spirit Bear”. We put three the most important theme in the video, nature, and forgiveness. The first, Cole went to the island for healing, Edwin and Garvey told he can learn patience, gentleness, strength, and honesty from other animals. Almost each chapter mentions of different animals all of them can teach Cole lesson. Every of animal is represent a different meaning. Last one is forgiveness, in the story, Cole’s biggest problem is he couldn’t forget anger and forgiveness someone, in the island, he tried to do not anger any more, Edwin took him to the pond and soak in it, or let him to hold the ancestor rock up to the hill and rolled it down, taught him many ways to forgive, and he started to help someone else. Finally, when he learns to forgive others and to try to help others recover from their own problems he make amends. The final and most important forgiveness, between Cole and Peter.
Conflict
From the story, these are many important conflicts. Such as Peter fight with Cole at school, but Peter was Cole injured, then Cole joined in the “Circle Justice” was sent to live on the island to learn how the real life is. And I think the other important conflict is Spirit Bear wounded Cole. After this Cole realize what the life is. And the other important conflict in our audience is Cole conflict with himself. In the story Cole always without a cause to angry. So that Cole heated people at school. And his mother is a very passive woman, so Cole feels very distant from her and he cannot open his heart to her. In his opinion, no one loves him and he doesn’t know how to love. That’s why now he not only don’t believe anyone, but also there have so full of anger and many wrong thought in his heart. So he needs to learn how to love, and the most important is he need to know forgiveness and understand.
